Teeth cleaning

I wondered if anybody had some advice about cleaning a dogs teeth.
I used to attempt to clean our dogs teeth with a dog toothbrush and paste but all they did was chew off the nylon bristles and lick off the toothpaste. I obviously wasn't doing it right and didn't feel that it was having any benefit. We now just rely on those dentastix things but again I can't see how these are having any benefit because they get demolished in about 30 seconds flat and just seem to coat the teeth.

I'm getting increasingly worried about the lack of teeth cleaning and feel really guilty that the eldest dog seems to have dark bits developing on his teeth. I'd hate for him to be in pain because I've done something wrong.

I'd be grateful if anyone has any advice about how they keep their dogs teeth clean.
