Doggy TMI question - when does 'self-grooming' become too much?

Right. 8 month old labradoodle seems to be occasionally obsessed with licking his own bottom, or 'DIY Rimming' as somebody posted the other day!
I don't think he pays it much attention during the day but in the evenings he'll happily work away at it for quite a long time.
I've heard that excessive bottom licking can be a sign of needing his, anal glands doing? What counts as 'excessive'?
He doesn't 'scoot'. Not sure what other symptoms to look out for?

Bumpity bump.

I'll add other socially delightful habits including poo munching and dry humping if it'll get your interest?!

Grin we had a thread on poo eating recently. oh the joys of living with dogs

mine had problems with her anal glands and as well as the scooting it also absolutely stunk (yuk). dont know if it always smells but sounds unlikely that it is that
especially as he only does it in the evenings. when mine was having problems she would do the self cleaning throughout the day as and when it was bothering her
