my dog is urinating muck more than usual

i have a 7 year old boxer dog who is in good health normally. i have noticed that he is urinating ALOT more than usual. he has even had 2 accidents in the house in the last week. he never does this. nothing has changed in his life so i dont think it is stress related and i have not noticed that he is drinking more. has anyone any ideas

He needs to see a vet. He may have a UTI.

I had a similar problem with my dog a while ago and would suggst that you take him to a vet and take a urine sample along - preferably not from the first wee of the day). You can start measuring his water straightaway so you can tell your vet how much he is drinking. I really hadn't realised how much mine was drinking as I just top the bowl up when I walk past.

My first thought was the same as Calamity's UTI.

But if he has been drinking more you'd need to find out why. Might be as simple as food/exercise/heat but I think your going to have to monitor him and visit the vets with more info.

I just took a plastic bowl and a jam jar out walking and when she squatted I pushed the bowl under her and then emptied it into the jam jar and tied that up in a plastic bag. Sophisticated, it wasn't!

Getting a sample is easier than you probably think. Get a bottle from Vets or use a clean plastic/glass jar to collect it.

Could be a UTI or diabetes or lots of things. The vet is the answer for some tests though.

I'd definitely echo the others that you should take him to the vet.

We use a shallow tupperware tub to get the wee. Just wait till he starts to wee and stick it under him. Then I transferred it into a jar with lid. It is easier than you might think.

Ah but you have a bitch, how do you get a sample from a dog? I can't imagine how to do it, he just sprays up trees and corners, lamp posts, bushes etc Hope I never need to try!

Calamity is that directed at me? I know, because I can read too. She said she hasn't noticed him drinking more which is why I suggested monitoring him. I wouldn't notice if mine was drinking more, there are two people in this house who fill up his bowl when ever we notice it low or before we go out.

No it wasn't directed at you particularly mmsmum - I misread the OP initially as "I have noticed him drinking more" and a couple of the replies suggested that others had done the same, that's all! :)

thanks for all the advise. he is not drinking more. he has never drinks apart from when he has just got in from his walks.
i am going to take him to the vets and i will tell you all how i get on with getting the sample

Hi my mams just been to the vets at the weekend with her 8yr old husky. He started weeing in the house. He tested positive for canine diabities and she has to inject insulin twice a day. They took a urine which vet said contained sugar and then confirmed it with a blood test. The vets says quite a few dogs are affected between the ages of 7 and 10.
