Lab with a split claw

My black lab/pointer cross has split his claw. not sure how but noticed it when he was a bit quiet yesterday. yesterday it had a crack i the nail and you could see red in the crack, today the nail has come off and you can see the red which i assume is the nail bed.
today hes holding his paw and not his usual boistrous self.
is there aything a vet can do? i rang them and they said bandaging it but he'll just pull it off. so unsure as if to take him and let them look and see what they say or to leave him and assume its sore, as it would eb if we were to pull off our toe nail but will get better by itself as long as clean and dry?

thanks

My Golden Retriever has had this happen,as long as the pads/foot doesn't feel hot(i'e infected) it should be ok.

thanks thast what i thought. hes just giving us that pitiful puppy dog eyes all night though. its not hot or swollen, i sprayed some savlon plaster on it but he licked it off, so i'm guessing thats not a good idea to use again.
