Please help me decide about my dog

I know this is going to sound strange, but I have a four yr old dog that I love to pieces, Bamboo Warrior, but I just can't look after her it any more. I find the whole thing of long walks EVERY day, hair, fleas, mud, slobber, expensive food, vets bills, pet passport, insurance etc just too much to cope with. It's driving me mad.

Now, I'm thinking that no one will be able to look after Bamboo as she should be looked after, no one will be good enough for my doggy, so wouldn't it be better to have go to sleep after a perfect four years than undergo a few more years of inferior quality life?

I can't help but think it's for the best.

none of this was funny and should have been stopped before it got this far, trolling should be stopped even if it is from the 'popular' posters.

Scuttlebutter · 27/01/2011 08:34

Giyadas, I can assure you that neither Larahuskey nor Hullygully are popular with me.

giyadas · 27/01/2011 10:25

yeah, I got that impression (perceptive, me) Grin

Surprised at you Hully, and saddened.

You could have at least apologised in good grace.

what's got into you? Sad

Hullygully · 27/01/2011 11:36

Oh dear lord.

Right, whilst I am sure this will not stem the tide of hatred, disapproval, sadness etc etc etc

  1. It was satirical. People may not find it funny, that's up to them. I am not going to apologise for that.
  1. As far as I am concerned, no subjects are off limits for humour/irony/satire etc. Again, people may not find them funny, I am not going to apologise for that either.
  1. It's not a joke about putting a dog down, it's a joke about a person who thinks like that. No apology there either.
  1. I am a Jain. I would like to assure all of you that not only am I a vegan, but I go out of my way never to kill a single living creature including flies, ants etc. I am opposed to specieism and do not think the human race has superiority over other species.
  1. The end. You may all carry on hating me, that is your prerogative, frankly that poker up the arse, self-righteous attitude saddens me. But hey ho.
IngridBergmann · 27/01/2011 11:42

Right.

No, that didn't help. You've inexorably coloured my opinion of you - and not, ironically, by your OP.

Never mind...never meet your idols and all that.

Hullygully · 27/01/2011 11:43
IngridBergmann · 27/01/2011 11:44

That's more like it.

You can't go wrong if you show a little shame.

IngridBergmann · 27/01/2011 11:45
Hullygully · 27/01/2011 11:46

I haven't got any shame. I've got the clay feet of many an idol.

Hullygully · 27/01/2011 11:48

Having said all the above, in line with my Jainism, of course I would not wish anyone to experience any degree of suffering on account of my actions and do feel sad about that.

But not spiteful old tattletale MotherJack.

wannaBe · 27/01/2011 12:03

hasn't this all got a bit hysterical?

ok, so suggesting having a dog pts could perhaps be considered in bad taste by some, and that dare thread seems to have caused more than one argument on mn. but...

it wasn't real.

There isn't a real dog.

No-one is having it put to sleep.

And the fact that people do actually do this doesn't change that.

And there is no comparison between putting a dog to sleep and child abuse. none. even joking about putting a dog to sleep is not comparible to joking about child abuse.

It was made very clear early on that this was because of the dare thread. ok so it was in bad taste.

But swearing and name calling makes you all look a bit deranged, actually. If you didn't like the thread then just hide it.

Vallhala · 27/01/2011 12:14

Hully - "4. I am a Jain. I would like to assure all of you that not only am I a vegan, but I go out of my way never to kill a single living creature including flies, ants etc. I am opposed to specieism and do not think the human race has superiority over other species."

Honestly? If so, much respect to you for that.

wannabe - "And there is no comparison between putting a dog to sleep and child abuse. none. even joking about putting a dog to sleep is not comparible to joking about child abuse."

In your opinion, maybe. Certainly not in mine.

Walk a mile in my shoes, as they say, and see what I have.

Hullygully · 27/01/2011 12:18

Val - fyi yes, honestly. (Altho to be absolutely honest, I do struggle with cockroaches)

Vallhala · 27/01/2011 12:25

I'm vegan too and in case you didn't guess an ardent animal rights supporter/campaigner/activist but I reckon struggling with cockroaches is entirely acceptable. :o

(I'd be more worried if you didn't struggle with the buggers tbh!).

I still don't think the thread is funny or acceptable, in the same way that many would be offended at "Paki jokes" (and yes, I use the offensive term deliberately here), or jokes about miscarriage, bereavement, the wheelchair-bound and soforth. There we must agree to differ I guess.

Hullygully · 27/01/2011 12:28

Fair enough.

Scuttlebutter · 27/01/2011 13:28

Lara, as MotherJack and a few other posters seem to have grasped, my post was an analogy, NOT that I find child abuse funny, far from it. I could equally well have picked another serious subject that I don't find funny, such as cancer, dying, disability or so on.

There is actually a strong link between child abuse and animal abuse - a number of studies have identified that people who abuse/are cruel to animals are very likely to be cruel to children/be violent generally. I can assure you that in dog rescue work, we see many, many cases of horrible, multiple problems where both children and animals have been badly let down by the adults who should be caring for and loving them - I find it deeply distressing at times. A dog warden I know really struggles with this side of the work sometimes, as she herself is a mum.

As for Hully's "everything is a suitable subject for comedy"/I'm so edgy and right on, great. Lovely. You may well be right, but don't expect other people to like it. I would have thought it more appropriate for someone of your faith to be supporting those of us who are trying our utmost day in and day out to save lives and minimise suffering. If that means I have a poker up my bottom, then I will wear it with pride.

And if you are a Jain, what do you feed your dog? Is it vegan too? What is your approach to companion animals? Many vegans/AR people I know don't feel comfortable at all with the whole idea of a furry plaything.

Sorry to be completely ignorant what is a jain? And why would you just make up a thread? And what is a troll? And what is the purpose of getting people so wound up? Honest question not rhetorical.
