Can I febreeze the dog?

SlubberdeGurnard · 17/01/2011 15:33

Not really.

But seriously my house REEKS.

They're muck spreading (is this usual in January) and then the muck runs off into the puddles and ditches and EVERY SINGLE SODDING puddle and ditch and small patch of field dampness MUST be lain in. Flamboyantly.

I knew I signed up for dog smell but not shit smell.

She gets hosed after every walk but still the stench lingers.

Is there something that I can burn or waft about that might help?

Add a bit of shampoo during the hosing?

Buy some nose pegs?

Move?

Roll in shit puddles too?

Ummm. No idea really, apart from the shampoo. My mums dog is the same, he also loves to roll in goose shit and rotting rabbits (which he buries for that very purpose). Unfortunately he isn't hosed

SlubberdeGurnard · 17/01/2011 16:14

I have thought about shampoo but we'd go through loads as she gets two hosings a day.

Lol @ roll in shit puddles too.

Could you swap her for a cat? Wink

HettyAmaretti · 17/01/2011 16:20

Can dogs tolerate human shampoo? You can usually get massive bottles of baby shampoo in pound shops...

MotherJack · 17/01/2011 16:22

I don't think you can. Not really. I have a similar problem and my new dog just luuuuurves smearing fox poo on herself. I say wait until they have stopped spreading and give everything a deep clean. If you must Grin

Alternatively, I can recommend smoking ridiculous amounts for 10 years. It's radical, but my sense of smell is very poor, even nearly 7 years after giving up Wink

nannynobnobs · 17/01/2011 16:25

I saw a dog in a full-on waterproof suit a couple of months ago, with elasticated ankle cuffs. (The arse end was open obv :o) maybe one of those? Easier to clean than shaggy stinky dog!

MotherJack · 17/01/2011 16:26

By the way, I meant to add there are several things you can burn/waft about but they only last so long before the dog smell greets you again. Good quality incense will do a good job of keeping it at bay (don't buy cheap incense - it's awful), but not as effective of burning your carpets and settee Wink

MotherJack · 17/01/2011 16:28

*as burning

SlubberdeGurnard · 17/01/2011 17:38

Loving the suggestions here, especially to take up smoking Grin

We don't even have carpets. Somehow the smell has permeated the walls [hyperbole].

Nannynobnob, the suit sounds amazing. If there are holes in it though then the stinky ditch water still has a point of access. I don't think it would be a go-er.

I may have to check out PAH and spend some more money, that or resign myself to living in shit-stink house.

Human shampoo works fine on my dog (and he has sensitive skin). If you compare the ingredients on the dog stuff it seems to be pretty much the same.

I feel your pain. It is awful this time of year isn't it?

BeenBeta · 17/01/2011 18:01

Sorry but I read "Can I freeze the dog?"

You need to wash the dog in a sink with dog shampoo. A small hand shower attached to the tap is useful to wash it off.

Tose little elasticated dog coats are great for occasisonal use but not every day.

elmofan · 17/01/2011 18:02

My pooch smells , we bought him doggy deodorant
in the pet shop , it helps but doesn't last long .

SlubberdeGurnard · 17/01/2011 18:03

Dreadful.

You only really notice if you go out for a few hours and then come back in.

SlubberdeGurnard · 17/01/2011 18:06

BeenBeta Grin @ freeze. She won't fit in the sink (25kg) and there ain't no way she's been taken upstairs to further pollute the bathroom with her heinous stench

OP posts:
Mrsfred · 17/01/2011 18:07

BeenBeta my dog weighs near on 45 kilos. I'd like to see you try and get him in a sink Grin

I use 'oust' airfreshener, which seems to work better than most with doggy smells.

Mrsfred · 17/01/2011 18:08

Grin x-post

elmofan · 17/01/2011 18:09

I should own shares in Febreeze by the amount of bottles Ive bought since we got the dog . For me the worst time is when you come downstairs first thing in the morning & the smell hits you

SlubberdeGurnard · 17/01/2011 18:39

elmo can I ask what you do with it? Do you just spray it up in the air and hope the febreeze molecules neutralise the pong?

OP posts:
sharbie · 17/01/2011 18:44

you stole my thread title Smile

i sprayed my bottle in the air and did a general waft in dogs direction.

SlubberdeGurnard · 17/01/2011 18:45

rofl. Love the febreeze waft.

elmofan · 17/01/2011 18:48

Well my dog sleeps in our playroom which is an extension onto the back of our house so when he is put there to go to bed i fabreeze the rugs , cushions , curtains etc in the rooms that the dog has been in during the day . It just masks the smell for a few hours .
The dog deodorant is worth a try too. At least you can spray that onto the dogs fur without it harming them .

claricebeansmum · 17/01/2011 18:52

Love this thread.
My stinky mutt is farting beside me having rolled in something unspeakable (do foxes wank?) Grin

I try to get my dog to swim in rivre after rolling in shit but she wont go in at moment because current too strong.

Hose. Shampoo. Dry.

I've developed Hoover Elbow since we got our dogs. And after trying all sorts of stupid things like that JML water-swirling ionic ball nonsense (£29.99), I finally gave in and bought incense stick diffusers - they waft out a steady stream of hound-masking aroma, and can be topped up with additional Febreezing and candles. The fresher Yankee Candles ones aren't too offensive, and the M&S Frankincense & Myrrh is almost capable of taking on two dogs at once.

Plus, you can't beat an open window.

SlubberdeGurnard · 17/01/2011 20:08

I've seen those diffuser stick doohickeys and oft wondered if they were any good. I may visit yankee candle tomorrow.

So far we seem to have avoided dead fox (or fox wank mmm) thank God. Pig shit or whatever they've spread is bad enough.
