I don't really understand why people think that having a dog license is a good thing. We have them where I live (in Canada) and essentially they are just another tax. More like a TV license than a drivers license, with no effect on how people look after dogs.

TrinityMotherOfRhinos · 16/01/2011 09:07

yes could you please explain why it would be a good idea?

I care for my dog to the best of my ability and I dont have a licence

people who dont give a shit about their dogs probably wont get a licence anyway but if they did how would it ensure the dog is well cared for

How is a licence a good idea?

TheFury · 18/01/2011 23:42

Here in Wandsworth a Councillor called Mr Govindia put forward a suggestion to introduce a £500 licence fee per dog, which was to be annually renewed. His intent, I am sure, was to eliminate dog ownership, simply to introduce a ban on dogs by making them too expensive for an average family to contemplate owning even one.

Licence fees will be the first step towards banning dog ownership, something a tiny but vociferous and often fanatical dog-hating minority has wanted to do for some time.

You might want to read instead about the Dog Ownership Test

BeenBeta · 19/01/2011 08:38

I often rant about this to DW.

I firmly believe that every dog should have a licence and that as a condition of that licence an inspector shoudl come to certify the dog has been chipped and that there is an adequate place for the dog to excercise and the place it is being housed is of an adequate size and its owner is physically/mentally capable of looking after and excercising it. A dog ownership test would also be a good idea. The licence fee woud pay for council dog wardens who would patrol and have the right to check the identity of each dog in the street as well as round up strays.

I live in what most people would describe as a genteel, leafy, well off part of our city and the number of usually older people who just let their do out to roam around drop its waste on the pavement is shocking. The number of dogs in towns has to be reduced and they have to be better looked after.

Dogs can be a menace and many are being cruelly kept in houses that are inadequate by people who dont or cant care for them. Guns have to be licenced, cars have to be licenced, all farm animals have to be tagged and contained by proper fencing and so should dogs. Having a dog is a privellege - not a right.

pinkdragonfly · 19/01/2011 11:21

BeenBeta toally agree that people should take proper care of there dogs, just not sure licencing would work,do you have a dog? And how would you go about reducing the number of dogs in town? LIke myself the majority of people look on ther dogs as part of the family, and love and treat them well. My dogs have been nutered and I do think that most dogs should as a matter of course. We must remember none of this is the dogs fault as with everything else its down to human beings.Sorry for long post.

pinkdragonfly · 19/01/2011 11:25

Smile sorry for terrible spelling!

mousymouse · 19/01/2011 11:28

I am all for a DOT. in the town of germany where my parents live every dog has to be on a lead at all times when out in public by default. certain dogs also have to be muzzled and a muzzle has to be worn on public transport.
owners can get an exemption license, for that the dog needs to pass a character test (recall needs to be perfect, dog mustn't show any agression towards other animals and humans). it works.

mousymouse · 19/01/2011 11:33

oh, and there is a dog license/dog tax as well on top of that.

HowAnnoying · 19/01/2011 11:43

ridiculous idea, only the responsible owners would get a licence, the police would only check licences if there was a complaint made, which is the same for illegal breeds, it wouldn't change a thing.

pinkanimal · 19/01/2011 11:50

BeenBeta · 19/01/2011 13:02

pinkdragon - yes my parents had over 40 dogs at one time when I as a child. They were all working or show dogs.

I have never had a dog as an adult as I have always felt I could never look after it as I would wish living in a town.

People rigtly are concerned about farm animals being looked after properly and allowed to express natural behaviour but a dog living in a house, without proper excercise, overweight and unable to express it natural instincts is just as cruel in my view.

ullainga · 19/01/2011 15:29

just a dog tax would not make any difference. In Switzerland all people who want to get a dog have to take both theoretical and practical course of dog-ownership - now that's a good idea.

Then again, I'm pretty sure this could not be enforced in UK and as said, only responsible people would and they are not the problem anyway.

babycuckoo · 19/01/2011 16:03

Er, how would this be enforced??? Surely irresponsible owners wouldnt bother getting a licence, only responsible loving owners like myself (I personally have no problem with licening, however dont think it would work).

Maybe be better to give the RSPCA more powers, (more funding) and allowing them to be able to remove more uncared etc.. animals, and enforce neutering of more dog/cats.
