Send your questions to The Dog Whisperer, Cesar Millan

RachelMumsnet · 20/12/2010 15:53

Great news for all those in The Dog House. We've been given the opportunity to send our canine questions to none other than the Dog Whisperer himself, Cesar Millan. Cesar is over in the UK to promote his forthcoming new series of the UK version of 'The Dog Whisperer' which will be aired in UK on Nat Geo Wild in early February 2011. We'll be filming some members of Mumsnet HQ (plus dogs) putting your questions to Cesar in January and we will be airing the film across the site at the end of January, to coincide with the launch of his new series. To stand a chance of getting your question to Cesar, post them to this thread before end of Tuesday 21st December 2010.

speaking of what has made me sick recently, i saw a youtube video of a frog being skinned alive. and apparently the fur trade skins animals alive- also the snakeskin trade. i can't begin to explain how terrible angry and sad and frustrated this makes me feel. and then i read an article by some silly woman justifying wearing fur. was struck speechless.

midori1999 · 23/12/2010 00:40

Seagreen, pointing out someone has little knowledge of dog behaviour (something Ruby pointed out about herself earlier in the thread) is hardly the same as telling someone to fuck off or calling them a twat is it? (only, she wasn't brave enough to say which memeber exactly she was calling a twat, perhaps she meant everyone who disagrees with her?)

I agree though, personal insults are not the way to go.

There is some disgusting animal cruelty going on in the world, you are sadly not wrong about that. Sad

MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe · 23/12/2010 07:53

I think that Ruby was calling me a twat, Midori.

stickersarecurrency · 23/12/2010 08:22

I don't see the problem with saying I've pulled her up before - I just mean that I've challenged her before now. Confused

Deafening silence from MNHQ ...

patterdaleperson · 23/12/2010 08:29

I haven't watched the video, (better do that now) but I've been told that Cesar did use an electric collar once ages ago and even when he did that it was to a lower level, so are you accusing him directly of animal cruelty????????

patterdaleperson · 23/12/2010 08:38

where are the links i cant find them

VallhalaLalalalalalalalaaaaaa · 23/12/2010 09:01

Links are all in this thread.

In answer to your question, yes, as are some of the other actions performed by Millan, which are also shown in the videos linked to on this thread.

patterdaleperson · 23/12/2010 09:21

ok thanks

ILoveItWhenYouCallMeBoo · 23/12/2010 10:42

patterdale i have quoted two extracts from his book 'be the pack leader' from cesar himself talking of individual cases where he used shock collars, he named the dogs and the circumstances. neither were for agressive dogs. i also quoted him in the same book sayinh he advocates the use of shock collars. i haven't read the whole book in a long time but if you like i can find more quotes from it wrt prong callers et al?

and arf at midori being 'uninformed'.

not sure if further engagement with that one serves any purpose other than to entertain her.

ILoveItWhenYouCallMeBoo · 23/12/2010 10:44

apologies, i attributed the 'uninformed' comment to ruby when it was actually ponders.

my comment regarding further engagement is in relation to ruby.

patterdaleperson · 23/12/2010 11:29

Yeah i saw the clip... pretty awful just to look at, but the sounds not workin on my computer so i can't hear what's goin on... Look i don't know how many times that's happened but obviously he does some good...

also i said something earlier about the fact that yes he did use a prong collar, but that was before and apparently now i'm not saying i know but apparently he is much less rough now than he was before... so i don't know but im still in favour of him coming on, I've still got something to hang onto which is the fact that at least some of his cases have a good outcome. ????????????????????????????? (deep breath)

DooinMeCleanin · 23/12/2010 11:37

But doing some good does not excuse the harm and suffering he causes.

If I throw my pup out onto the streets to freeze is that okay because I have rescued one dog, so I am doing some good. Of course it's not!!

ILoveItWhenYouCallMeBoo · 23/12/2010 11:40

patterdale less rough still isn't good dog training. there is no need for any rough handling with dogs. so sorry but just because he isn't quite as cruel (perhaps due to lawsuits) doesn't mena he is a good dog trainer or behaviourist.

VallhalaLalalalalalalalaaaaaa · 23/12/2010 11:51

This is not an accidental double post. This is a repeated post because it wasn't answered and clearly the point didn't sink in the first time.

"Oh FFS some people are beyond bloody belief.

It works sometimes, so that's alright then.
Are you willing to meet the kid who Jack bit thanks to CM's training advice, and tell her that?

Better still, why not come to the rescue I help out at and do some of the work, in the cold, the snow, the rain, that is necessary to care for him? Or pay for his food, medication and other needs? How about you pay the price of a boarding kennel for a pound dog to be moved into for the duration of Jack's rehabilitation and until he finds a new home? Because all the time he is taking up a rescue space, that kennel is not available to a pound dog and the pound dog will either need to go into a boarding kennel or die. We haven't enough rescue spaces as it is, English dogs alone are dying in pounds in their hundreds each week as it is, without CM causing rescue more work.

I say to the pro-CM fans, get your nose away from the TV, get off your arse and get yourself to an independent rescue where you will see for yourself the tragic results of CM's "training", just like I and others here do. Then and only then come back and tell me that I'm wrong."

patterdaleperson · 23/12/2010 12:33

Is Jack the only one you've had to deal with...

patterdaleperson · 23/12/2010 12:35

Also I put it wrongly he does not use those methods anymore...

patterdaleperson · 23/12/2010 12:38

Anyway, I don't think i can win with you and i guess i'll just have to accept that you're not going to take my point but i think it would be helpful and benificial to me and others with dogs who need thier questions answered to have Cesar on because he can help.

DooinMeCleanin · 23/12/2010 12:42

So can Val, Midori, Minimu and many, many more posters on here. They can help and advise you without asking you to cause your dog fear or pain. It's just they are tad too busy doing actual helpful work to be out making TV shows.

VallhalaLalalalalalalalaaaaaa · 23/12/2010 12:50

Yet again I'll answer your questions, Patterdale, although I note that you're continuing to avoid answering mine.

Jack is one which I and my children personally deal with. He is one of about 60 dogs in one particular rescue shelter. There are other dogs in that shelter who are there because of problems arising from owners using aggressive training techniques akin to Millan's and consistant with his advice although whether because of it I do not know. I do personally know of several other cases like Jack's, being handled or which have been handled by friends in rescue and animal rights/welfare, where it is known that Millan's techniques were used.

Are you willing to answer my questions now?

Fancy joining me for a day and getting your hands dirty helping the dogs which this idiot's advice have screwed up or are you going to carry on amateurishly pontificating from your armchair.

midori1999 · 23/12/2010 13:01

Patterdale, did you see Minimu's post about why you rdog gets on the sofa when you are not there and why CM's methods can cause exactly this sort of problem?

I have always used similar (to Minumus suggestions) with my dogs. We don't have a 'no dogs on the sofa' rule here though, just a 'no dogs on the sofa without an invitation' rule. So, my dogs are sometimes allowed on the sofa. Yet they never try to get on the sofa without being asked.

It was probably one of mine, Korma!

If so, I will stand by it regardless.

As I said, so sue me. :)
