Send your questions to The Dog Whisperer, Cesar Millan

Great news for all those in The Dog House. We've been given the opportunity to send our canine questions to none other than the Dog Whisperer himself, Cesar Millan. Cesar is over in the UK to promote his forthcoming new series of the UK version of 'The Dog Whisperer' which will be aired in UK on Nat Geo Wild in early February 2011. We'll be filming some members of Mumsnet HQ (plus dogs) putting your questions to Cesar in January and we will be airing the film across the site at the end of January, to coincide with the launch of his new series. To stand a chance of getting your question to Cesar, post them to this thread before end of Tuesday 21st December 2010.

ILoveItWhenYouCallMeBoo · 22/12/2010 22:12

again, who are you referring to with the twat comment?

it would help if you added the posters name to save confusion.

WSPA are one of the organisations, which, together with the RSPCA (Britain's flagship animal welfare organisation), the Dogs Trust, WGAS and various others condemned Millan's techniques in the press release which has been referred to in earlier posts upon here.

UK animal welfare, behaviour, training, canine and veterinary organisations1 are again warning of the possible dangers of using techniques for training dogs that can cause pain and fear, such as some of those seen used by Cesar Millan, who starts his UK tour this week.

The organisations have joined forces to voice their serious concerns about techniques which pose potential welfare problems for dogs and significant risk to owners who may copy them. These concerns are shared, and the statement supported, by similar organisations around the world2 and in continental Europe3.

Aversive training techniques, which have been seen to be used by Cesar Millan, are based on the principle of applying an unpleasant stimulus to inhibit behaviour. This kind of training technique can include the use of prong collars, electric shock collars, restricting dogs? air supply using nooses/leads or pinning them to the ground, which can cause pain and distress. The use of such techniques may compromise the welfare of dogs and may worsen the behavioural problems they aim to address, potentially placing owners at considerable risk. A number of scientific studies have found an association between the use of aversive training techniques and the occurrence of undesired behaviours in dogs.

The organisations believe that the use of such training techniques is not only unacceptable from a welfare perspective, but that this type of approach is not necessary for the modification of dog behaviour. Dog trainers all over the UK use reward-based methods to train dogs very effectively. Where dogs have behaviours which owners find unacceptable, such as aggression or destruction, qualified behaviourists achieve long term changes in behaviour through the use of established and validated techniques of behaviour modification without subjecting dogs to training techniques which may cause pain or distress.

We urge dog owners to carefully consider the help they choose to train their dogs or tackle behavioural problems, in particular to ensure that the trainer does not use any techniques which may put the welfare of the dogs at risk.

its true, sorry. missbeehive - i've seen your posts elsewhere and have been equally underwhelmed. ridiculous.

orangepink · 22/12/2010 22:16

Please count me in as an objector too.

I rarely post but feel compelled to add my voice. I watched some CM programmes a few years ago and was shocked by his bullying and cruel tactics. I am a dog owner and I know several other dog owners; an overwhelming majority of them do not agree with his methods.

Ponders · 22/12/2010 22:19

Valhalla, you have misunderstood the purpose of my rephrased post.

WhyHavePets · 22/12/2010 22:23

Another very strong vote against anything to do with CM being on here.

I am sure he would make an eyecatching poster HQ but the fact is that it is another promotion vehicle for somone who has been roundly slated by welfare organisations across the UK and USA.

All the rest of the arguments are a side issue really, there is no way it would be ok to have a child expert on here who physically harms children as part of their technique and who the medical and child welfare professions had slated - no matter how many people said "ooh but I think they are fab" or "but it worked for me".

The same applies here, professional opinion is that his techniques are harmful and cruel therefore he has no place on a caring forum such as this.

VallhalaLalalalalalalalaaaaaa · 22/12/2010 22:28

Orangepink, number 37.

Are you listening, MNHQ?

Ponders - maybe I have, i'm tired and can't be arsed to go back over your words to work out which way you're insulting me and those who agree with me this time. You're doubtless right, I'm probably a very unpleasant person.

I'm still bloody proud of what I do though - not just rescue, but educating people too - so frankly, I couldn't give a toss what you think of me.

I'm happy to have been thanked here on MN tonight for helping to save a very special dog from what could have been a very, very miserable life. Seems not everyone agrees with you - read Ladyofthehousespeaking's post about halfway down

VallhalaLalalalalalalalaaaaaa · 22/12/2010 22:29

WhyHavePets, number 38.

I do hope MNHQ are taking note. :o

Aw! Blush

Dunno why they deleted you Korma... after all, I said I was defecting to NetMums and that comment stayed!

Funnily enough, I was on there shortly afterwards, advising on a stray cat problem. For all their huns and tickers (and ignorance in rescuing stray cats) at least they don't invite arseholes on there!

MotherJack · 22/12/2010 23:01

Bloody hell. The lunatics have taken over the asylum!

PS Your link reminded me of our recent conversations, Val. I'm checking up again tomorrow. Wish I had your courage of conviction in the face of the "taxi home", but I have seen her out and about a couple of times and I bought her a new fleecy lined bed a couple of weeks ago.... Arse :(

This sounds like everything harking back to the SWMNBN debacle, Korma. I can understand them being twitchy about that sort of thing in that light. Which prob in turn explains the sticky pin being removed.

Tell you what MN, hows about removing the whole "chat" thing with Cesar? It would solve so many problems, including Mumsnet being associated with someone who has been cited by many professionals and animal welfare charities as being inhumane to dogs.

39

Has anyone tallied those in favour, out of interest, or is it just too obvious which way anyone with a conscience should go?

VallhalaLalalalalalalalaaaaaa · 22/12/2010 23:33

There you are, MNHQ, 39 people who object to Cesar Millan and to MN entertaining him, including vets and behaviouralists,

What say you now?

DooinMeCleanin · 22/12/2010 23:33

I think it's 39 against and 3 for MotherJack.

RubyBuckleberry · 22/12/2010 23:46

ooh 39 people Hmm

look at his twitter account and you will see he is doing ALOT of good things you shouldn't be ignoring

when i say you i mean the anti cesar crew lol

DooinMeCleanin · 22/12/2010 23:48

OFGS Ruby, have a look at several hundred sites not ran by his marketing teams and you will see he is doing nothing of the sort.

RubyBuckleberry · 22/12/2010 23:49

aah that is mean!
he has good advice on there and is helping dogs in bali Grin

TigerseyeMum · 22/12/2010 23:49

Doing 'good things' does not negate doing bad things. Even the Krays loved their mother Grin

Cesar is one of thos funny ones, he gets these loyal followers who would defend him to the end in spite of the evidence to the contrary. A bit like any other spun celeb with a formiddable PR machine I suppose.

Cameron should take note.

RubyBuckleberry · 22/12/2010 23:50

are you saying that is not true? that it is lies. a complete fabrication. i've been had.

lolol don't be silly.
