Send your questions to The Dog Whisperer, Cesar Millan

Great news for all those in The Dog House. We've been given the opportunity to send our canine questions to none other than the Dog Whisperer himself, Cesar Millan. Cesar is over in the UK to promote his forthcoming new series of the UK version of 'The Dog Whisperer' which will be aired in UK on Nat Geo Wild in early February 2011. We'll be filming some members of Mumsnet HQ (plus dogs) putting your questions to Cesar in January and we will be airing the film across the site at the end of January, to coincide with the launch of his new series. To stand a chance of getting your question to Cesar, post them to this thread before end of Tuesday 21st December 2010.

Patterdale the example you give re the sofa and your dog is exactly a situation that can be caused by CM methods.

Why does you dog go on the sofa because ... it is comfy.
Why does he not get on the sofa when you are there because ..... he gets told off

Why does he go on the sofa when you are not there because .....you are not there to tell him off.

He has not learnt not to go on the sofa just not go on the sofa when grumpy owners yell at him to get off.

Using positive methods you would give him a comfy bed in the sitting room and every time he goes to the comfy bed he gets a treat. Sometimes he may even find a treat in there as he walks by.

Result the dog will choose to go to the comfy bed because nice things happen when he is there. He has no need to go on the sofa when the better place to be is his bed.

Sorted! Happy relaxed dog and no dog hairs on the sofa.

It's not a webchat. It's an invitation to submit questions which he will edit and answer a month later.

He doesn't have the balls for a live webchat. Like all bullies, he's a coward. A very slick, self promoting bully, with a huge organisation behind him (I believe you can buy a Cesar app for your phone - at a cost - as well as heaps of merchandise), but a bully nonetheless.

RubyBuckleberry · 22/12/2010 19:36

Jeez, some of this sounds like slander. (no idea if that is actually possible on an anonymous forum).

ILoveItWhenYouCallMeBoo · 22/12/2010 19:39

i think you mean libel.

VallhalaLalalalalalalalaaaaaa · 22/12/2010 19:41

Something which I think is very telling is that a lot of dog websites refer to CM's unacceptable practices with links to video footage showing the acts they're complaining about but in almost all cases I've found that the incriminating videos have been pulled. Sometimes it is explained that this is for copyright/legal purposes. I did some asking around and I was told that CM's publicity machine is rather jumpy and that his lawyers are quick to issue threats at the first sign of adverse publicity.

stickersarecurrency · 22/12/2010 19:42

I doubt that it could be slander. Libel if anythin. But he'd have to proud it was untrue to start with.

stickersarecurrency · 22/12/2010 19:44

fair enough, libel. the whole thing is incredibly polarised. i had no idea.

RubyBuckleberry · 22/12/2010 19:56

actually this thread is incredibly polarised. the debate outside of this thread is more measured.

haha that sounds soooo grumpy thebrandybutterflyeffect! 'i didn't get the impression you were aware of a debate outside this thread'. haha chill out it doesn't take much reading to find a whole world written about it across the internet.

this thread is much more the other way with interesting comments from someone who works with 'high rank drive' dogs and he says although forbidden to use apparatus such as prong collars, occasionally they work very well and in a very short time

RubyBuckleberry · 22/12/2010 20:11

omg and you iloveitwhenyoucallmeboo!

Bella32 · 22/12/2010 20:16

The reason the debate is 'polarised' on here is because most people on this thread know a bit about dogs Xmas Wink

RubyBuckleberry · 22/12/2010 20:21

wisest is she that knows that she does not know Wink

stickersarecurrency · 22/12/2010 20:37

Ruby, exactly what qualifies those who posted on that article? Fellow remote control jockeys perhaps?

midori1999 · 22/12/2010 20:41

Ruby, the link you posted is full of comments saying CM's methods are not inhumane. Do you agree (in your limited knowledge, obviously) that strangling, chokng and cutting off a dog's air supply until it's tongue goes blue is humane? Do you think applying electric shocks to a dog is humane? Do you think forcing a terrified dog to be confronted by it's fears even though it's terrified and yank a prong collar on it's neck whenever it shows that fear is humane? (In fact, do you think that is even likely to cure that fear?) Running a dog on a treadmill until it is ill humane?

You have been asked various questions on this thrwad that you have been unable to answer, yet everyone else has answered your own questions in detail providing links as evidence. You're arguement as to why animal welfare organisations (whos sole aim, lets face it, is animal welfare, no agenda, no profit involved and the BVA (again, no agenda, animal wlefare concerns only) are against CM and his methods is they are jealous he'll steal their dog training thunder... Hmm

Bella32 · 22/12/2010 20:50

I think you're misquoting Plato there, Ruby.

Iirc he said something more like 'wisest is she who knows what she doesn't know. You don't know very much about dogs - I know sod all about iguanas, so I tend to stay away from arguments about those Xmas Grin

RubyBuckleberry · 22/12/2010 20:53

'everyone else has answered your own questions in detail providing links as evidence.'

er, not really. and anyway, it is totally irrelevant whether i have answered your questions or not. you assume your questions are good ones Hmm.

the thread is interesting as there are lots of different people with lots of different ideas instead of a few fanatics who refuse to see that to a few million odd people, his methods work. his messages to dog owners are good ones, exercise, discipline, affection is a fantastic way to approach dog ownership to prevent bad cases happening.

in the cases of abused and damaged dogs and 'high rank drive' or 'red zone' cases, well, that's not easy to find a definitive answer in terms of how exactly to handle these dogs that doesn't mean you have to put them down and can mean a happy life for them. cesar millan HAS succeeded in doing this for plenty of dogs and you cannot ignore it.

someone also made a point about outdated views and how in some cases perhaps it is better to go back to views which are apparently 'outdated'.

RubyBuckleberry · 22/12/2010 20:53

its socrates

ILoveItWhenYouCallMeBoo · 22/12/2010 20:54

Grin at ruby getting her smug quote about wisdom wrong!!

ruby it has been obvious from your first post here that you know not what you speak of. just promise me that you will never own a dog and i will quite happily ignore the rest of your idiotic drivel.

RubyBuckleberry · 22/12/2010 20:56

i taught philosophy before having DS. perhaps i might know a bit about that Grin.

actually it was this man that changed it to a she

RubyBuckleberry · 22/12/2010 20:56

off you fuck iloveitwhenyoucallmeboo lol
