Send your questions to The Dog Whisperer, Cesar Millan

Great news for all those in The Dog House. We've been given the opportunity to send our canine questions to none other than the Dog Whisperer himself, Cesar Millan. Cesar is over in the UK to promote his forthcoming new series of the UK version of 'The Dog Whisperer' which will be aired in UK on Nat Geo Wild in early February 2011. We'll be filming some members of Mumsnet HQ (plus dogs) putting your questions to Cesar in January and we will be airing the film across the site at the end of January, to coincide with the launch of his new series. To stand a chance of getting your question to Cesar, post them to this thread before end of Tuesday 21st December 2010.

A last resort after what exactly?

Ruby The fact is, he often isn't a last resort at all. The dog that he used an e-collar on to stop it chasing cars. Do you honestly believe a behaviourist couldn't use positive methods to change the dog's behaviour? The dog that he also used an e-collar on to stop it chasing cats. Several member have commented on this thread (inlcuding myself) that we have used positive methods to stop dogs chasing cats. The dog that kept jumping into the swimming pool, did that really need to be put to sleep if CM didn't see it? Could it's behaviour also not have been altered using positive methods? (I have actually seen Victoria Stillwelld deal with simlar, using only positive methods)

You have admitted yourself you know little about dog training or behaviour. Yet you believe you know better than not only those on this thread who are very experienced with dogs and some of them qualified too, but also better than all the qualified and successful behaviourists out there who believe CM is a danger to dogs. However, apparently it is us that are 'arrogant' and 'uppity'. Hmm

The reason he is so successful is because thousands of others like you, who know little about dogs, watch his programme, believe what he says and think he is saving these dogs. My DH was one of them until he started to really learn about dogs.

and f*ing rude TheBrandyButterflyEffect!

I just said IMO I think he is great. Its opinion. Not fact. And not based in research. Chill out. I've been around on Mumsnet a while and only a few posters are uppity on a few occasions. Like I said, I see good work when I see CM and all those dogs he rescues. Something some of you lot are choosing to ignore.

"I see good work when I see CM "

tbh it doesn't sound like you would know good work if it rolled over infront of you to be tickled.

minimu1 · 21/12/2010 13:45

It is bollocks that cesar millan is the last resort and the only saviour for these dogs. I would guarantee that the same issues will return within days when Cesar has left and usually with added issues as well.

Also there are 100s of positive reward based dog trainers and behaviourists dealing with dogs on a day to day basis "saving" "aggressive" and "problem" dogs. Often having to undo all the behaviours that have been caused by Millans methods.

Bella if clients come to me with e collars and choke chains. I politely put one on their wrist (would like to put it around their necks but I try to stay professional!) and use it. Between us the decision to use one has never been needed!!!!!

Not choosing to ignore.Ruby, just less naive and blinded by marketing than you.

oh yes pleas brandy, if you don't mind?

stickersarecurrency · 21/12/2010 14:00

Loads of people take on dogs that others won't. They just don't have TV shows with which to promote themselves.

midori1999 · 21/12/2010 14:01

Surely that fact he rescues dogs means very little when the fact is, a lot more dogs are ending up in rescues or being put to sleep because of his methods.

If his contributions ot rescue and saving dogs lives were so great, why do so many animal welfare organisations, who's sole aim is to help and save dogs (unlike Millan who makes a pretty penny for what he does) speak out against him?

VallhalaLalalalalalalalaaaaaa · 21/12/2010 14:18

"few of you have jumped on the bandwagon of some official organisations and are earnestly spouting 'the official line' "

Now that is fucking rude. As is calling people uppity because they speak from experience, which, I take it, you don't have, Ruby.

As others on here know, I am one of the "official organisations'" biggest critics. I hate the RSPCA with a vengance, I have no respect for Wood Green Animal Shelters (another of those who authorised their opinions to be made public that press release), with good reasons I won't bore you with. I usually am so far off from "official" policy on animal welfare as to make Hitler look like Mary Poppins.

Disagree with me by all means but you are in no position to tell me, after years in rescue and dog welfare - or the other experienced rescuers here, or the qualified behaviouralist, or the vet nurse... that we are jumping on the frigging RSPCA's bandwagon.

TrinityMotherOfRhinos · 21/12/2010 14:31

I think ruby needs to go far away and someone needs to teach her about television and it not being 'real'

DooinMeCleanin · 21/12/2010 14:37

My problem with him is (along with thefact half his methods are downright cruel) is that the public will copy his methods to his their own detriment.

Joe Public simply cannot go aound pinning agressive dogs to the floor. Not if they like their face and limbs in one piece.

But Joe Public, who is seriously struggling with Fido and believes nothing else will work because he has listened to pack theory rubbish far too often will not think like that. He will do what CM says will save his dog. If he is lucky he might end up with a dog more fear-agressive than ever before, if he is not he might end up in A and E getting his face sewn back together and Fido will PTS.
