xmas poundies in need!

Its lovely to hear that many of us are buying gifts for our four-legged friends this xmas - but if you have any items that your dog no-longer needs/uses could you please donate them to your local animal rescue charities - and help make it a happier xmas for those poor animals aswell?

I do voluntary dog fostering for my local animal rescue and we largely work with dogs that come from the pound - we take over their care after they have served their statutory 7 days - else they face being PTS.

Unfortunately this happens in several local authorities.

We also re-home hand-in dogs.

We are always grateful for food, blankets, collars, leads and toys etc - and im sure your local rescues would be too.

So please, please if you have anything like this - consider your local rescue.

Well said Terrier141. In my expereince rescues are desperately trying to pay their heating bills and so help with all the other things they need is precious to them.

Many rescues are not charity-registered as they find it impossible to comply with the requirements. By this I mean that under charity regulations an item must be solely for the beneficiaries' use - so there goes the van that the rescue owner also uses to go shopping in, there goes the washing machine which washes both dog blankets and his jeans and so on.

Remember too please that dogs which are surrendered by their owners don't even get 7 days in which to be PTS. These dogs may be killed immediately after they are handed in... and so often they are, especially when the pound is full.

And never is the pound more full than just before Christmas. :(

If I may, I'll add to Terrier141's list - as well as food, blankets, toys and collars/leads, we also need shredded paper, newspaper and duvets. Rescues may well have individual needs too - atm the one I volunteer for (in Cambs) is desperately seeking plywood and some old UPVC doors. So, a quick call to your local rescue to ask what you can do would doubtless be much appreciated. You never know, you might just have the UPVC doors they're looking for! :o

And if you can do nothing else, please do this:

Spread the word that a rescue dog is not a risk or an unknown quantity, that many DO come from a family home and HAVE got a history behind them, that a reputable rescue will assess before rehoming and that most dogs are in rescue through no fault of their own.

Sorry - I lost track of what I was trying to say there (blame old age the kids arguing). I meant to say that as many rescues were not registered charities they get no help from the public purse and are entirely self-funding... and that's a real struggle.

Is it as simple as doing a google search to find your local rescue?
If we had one close enough, I'd hapily take my kids and help out there in whatever way I could. I'd also be happy to help with items they may need but I literally have no idea who or where they are.
The 4 rescue dogs I've had have always came from battersea but they aren't that close to me.

yep - just google search your local area - there are sure to be some close by.

I picked up my latest poundie puppy on foster today - a Lurcher pup - so glad he's out of the pound and here in the warm with us!

fab post. AT the moment I am fostering a Cane Corso and bless her, she is lovely and needs a new home. She is homeless through no fault of her own, just family circumstances.

I will also contact my local rescue place and see what they need. I do drop off food now and again for them.

I had a look on that link and the closest one to me is a 30 minute drive away. I am sure there is a closer one, am still looking on google.

I have seen a page for dogs trust and am just looking what I can spend my money on in their online catalogue.

Was just looking at rescues in my area and noticed this hope that beautiful little dog finds a home.

Thanks for this terrier, I have some Eukanuba Large Breed Puppy food that doesn't agree with our dog, but the only rescue anywhere near me is RSPCA - do you think they would take it?

Also have things like puppy collars and leads he's grown out of, presume they're useful too?

Why not try freecycle for your pvc doors - put a wanted notice on there - I'm sure someone will have them knocking about in the garage/attic!
