i reward everytime he pees or poos outside, i bring him out and give him the 'pee pee' command and he will go but then 20 minutes later in the hosue he will go again but eh doesn't give any sign he is going to do it or that he wants out. he could be following me across the living room and he will jsut stop and pee. what can i do?

no, 18 weeks. i have had him 10 weeks now. i thought he might have got teh hang of it by now. is this normal?

what type of dog is it?

I would go right back to basics if you can. Clean the area inside with specilist pet cleaner to get rid of all the smells that the dogs can smell even if we can't.

Some dogs do go backwards a bit and some just get confused. So outside every hour, if it is the dogs habit to wee and then wee a few minutes later go outside do first wee and then back outside a few minutes later. Goldies work really well for treats so have a yummy treat that you only give to him after he wees outside bit of sausage maybe.

I would also take a sample to the vets just to rule out an infection.

Remember as well that I don't expect my dogs to ask to go out -they go to the wee when I tell them so make it easy as possible for him and give him the opportunity to wee in the correct place when he does get the hang of it gently increase the time you expect him to wait.

I'll do that then, back to basics. what sort of cleaner should i be using? at the minute i am using white vinegar with a tiny drop of stardrops.

You need to get a specialist enzyme pet cleaner. Most pet shops have them. It removes the smell that we can't pick up but they can.

Our terrier pup, who's the same age, still makes mistakes, and I know from past experience with three other dogs that it can take eight months or so with this breed.

It's a bloody nuisance but some do seem to be more obtuse than others. They do learn, though. :)

thanks abr1de. i am lucky that i have all laminate flooring but i had hoped to be able to put all my rugs back down by now. ah well. i will keep at it and get the cleaner aswell.

Try asking him as you walk to the door 'Do you want to go out?' in a perky voice.

I did this for a while with Rudy now I can ask him and if he does he runs to the door and if he doesn't he just raises a questioning eyebrow and looks away.

If nobody has asked him and he needs out, he just whines at us prompting us to ask 'Do you need to go out?'.

thanks WTWTW, that's a good idea. i think he might be starting to get it now as last night was the 2 night of no wees during the night.
