Does my dog need a winter coat?

Dh says no she'll look stupid! We have a springer x. She is the size of a small springer, but has short fur. The other week she was with me watching Saturday morning football training for 2.5/3 hours. I took her for a walk - charge through the woods - for 45 minutes and then we watched the rest. To start with she was fine, but for the last hour she was shaking. It was a very chilly morning, so I'm assuming she was cold.

She is a slim dog, with not much fat on her. Does she need a little coat (I'm embarrassed thinking about it) just for those hanging around in the cold situations? For her normal walks she seemed fine even in the snow last year as she charges around like a mad thing.

Are you likening these to a Man at C&A parka, Scuttle? [hgrin]

Scuttlebutter · 29/10/2010 13:41

Um yes.[hshock] Also, no self respecting pointy would put up with harsh plastic like that or tolerate the fact the collar is the wrong shape and they would back out of it sharpish (to be cussed and due to the social embarrassment) [hgrin]

Have uploaded a piccy of a togged up Rudy to my profile to show off my pretty puppy sewing skillsGrin.

Not sure it's suitable for undercover workWink.

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 29/10/2010 13:55

Here you go Bella, the Bond version of your collarGrin.

Bellaween · 29/10/2010 14:02

Wow, Wildie. It's a different world. A very smart world, but a very different one to mine where my mud spattered pooches come screeching back bearing great clumps of hawthorn and bramble [hgrin]

Going for a lie down in a darkened room now [hwink]

GrimmaTheNome · 29/10/2010 14:18

Oh, he's gorgeous.

Tempted to ask if you're planning a fur collar for him in the future... but the other critter (is it a rat?) is really too cute for such jests.

DooinMeCleanin · 29/10/2010 14:27

People really need to stop linking to Whippet coats and collars. Poppy is not big enough for them yet and I already have a shopping list as long as my arm. Plus I am an eejit and feel terribly guilty whenever she gets anything new and so have to buy Scruff something, so he doesn't feel left out Hmm Grin

The coats you made are great though WTWTW, your'e not planning on making any to sell are you? Smile

GrimmaTheNome · 29/10/2010 14:32

The Equafleece polo neck coat looks nice - doesn't look as fiddly to get on as some designs. I can't imagine dressing a wriggly dachs in some of the things with legs or loads of buckles - getting his collar back on him is performance enough!

Measuring him was quite fun too Grin lucky DD is on hols so could assist.

Scuttlebutter · 29/10/2010 14:34

Actually, the collars from 2 Hounds and Around the Hounds are washable and surprisingly hardwearing. I wash them gently by hand but chuck the leads in the machine regularly and they do brilliantly. Am therefore convincing myself that they are in fact a sensible purchase and in no way represent extravagance or luxury.... [hblush] Ours do get mud spattered and come back bearing clumps of Yorkshire terrier or slow moving squirrel (joke)...

Wildie - the coat, the coat - please start selling them. Oh and leave the pup in too [hwink] he's adorable. Seriously, there is a gap in the market for coats as nice as the collars.

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 29/10/2010 18:15

Aw thank you for everyones nice commentsBlush.

I have plans for many more....

I would love to make them commercially but I don't think I am good or quick enough for it to be worthwhile.

I might consider it anyone is interested in a one off though, pm me, it would depend if I could work out the measurements Smile.

Grimma Shock I will not be using my lovely Mika as a furry whippet ruff Grin. Though there is enough of him, little fatty that he is. I must put piccys of his brothers up too.

Bellaween · 29/10/2010 18:19

Lol @ whippet ruff [hgrin]

HEXentricaGallumbits · 29/10/2010 18:22

dachshund coat

SmallDog has a red one.

MmeBodyInTheBasement · 29/10/2010 18:37

Daphne has 5 collars, although two of them are a bit small for her now. I am tempted by naughty WTWTA's links.

WTWTA
I will PM you, would be interested in a jacket for Daphne.

GrimmaTheNome · 29/10/2010 22:11

gallumbits - I already ordered the fleece - shame because I really feel I ought to support the maker you linked to 'hello wonderful dachshunds
I AM A DACHSHUND TAILOR.' Grin. Obviously filling an important niche!

Bellaween · 30/10/2010 10:04

Okay, Grimma - so now I have a mental image of a dachsie with a measuring tape round his neck....[hgrin]
