Petition to stop christmas puppy ads

Hello all

I saw and signed this petition today

www.PetitionOnline.com/annao/petition.html

basically petitioning free-ad sites (eg gumtree) to stop taking adverts for Staffies for the month of December, to discourage further over-breeding (which as we know leads to many healthy dogs being destroyed.)

Please sign/circulate as you see fit!

Quod

(I know this is a sticking plaster on a massive problem, but worth taking action on I think...)

While I don't disagree with the idea behind this petition, can I advise a note of caution? If you check the website, firstly they simply host the petition - there is no guarantee it will be delivered to the likely recipients - that is entirely at the discretion of the petition originator. In this case, all that is given is a Hotmail address - while they may be perfectly sincere and reputable, there is no guarantee and they could be malicious, or just after the email addresses. Since in this case the originator does not say when or which sites are being contacted, I am a little sceptical.

Secondly, the search for the site's privacy policy was fruitless - what many of these sites do is "harvest" the email addresses for selling on to likely mailing lists e.g. if you have signed a petition about animal welfare you are likely to receive emails encouraging you to sign up for various environmental charities for instance. Also, anyone can view the email addresses written, opening yourself right up to spammers. I would avoid this as a campaigning tool, and NEVER sign this type of petition myself.

If you really want to address the issue of Christmas puppy ads, then please write directly to the free ad sites yourself.

And lastly, it's a pity the campaign is just about Staffys - pups of all varieties are vulnerable.

I just used my 'just for spam n shit' email address.
