chose a bitch, now what?

We are getting another dog, a black GSD puppy, mid October. Names are on short (long) list and we have crate, gates, vetbed, puppy toys for her, actually we have plenty of everything.

I havent had a female for about 10 years and as we have had dogs I am pretty sure I am in for a steep learning curve.

so what books do I need to read? Tell me all the gory things I have blocked out forgotten and who do you advise we insure her with?

My boy is with direct line and while they have been fine, they arent my favourite company, taking 8 weeks to settle bills.

ANY advice, help and encouragement greatly appreciated from the fountain of knowledge on here.

I use Petplan - expensive but they do settle fast and give good cover.

Re bitch pups vs dog pups - no difference at all until the bitch comes into season. Are you planning on spaying her?

Book wise, The Culture Clash by Jean Donaldson is excellent - a good read and will teach you loads.

We use Pinnacle and they have always been excellent when we've claimed.

thanks Bella and Laska - I am awaiting delivery of The Culture Clash, Bella and I spoke about it the other day and I havent read that book.

I used to have petplan for my other shepherd, never needed to use it - in all his 10 years. In my young things 17 months, we have used our insurance already.

I havent heard of Pinnacle, and if I remember correctly Guide Dogs use Petplan.

Cant wait for the new girl to arrive.
