hi, i think my little staffie is pg, she was jumped on at least 3 times by my other dog last time she was in season (about 4 weeks ago) and she is looking portly around the belly and her nipples are swollen

will she be ok if left to do her thing? do i need to do anything special? i've always had dogs but never a pg one so just need to know what if anything i need to do, thanks

i would take her to the vet if it were me. best to get her checked to confirm it is a pregnancy. some dogs can have a phantom pregnancy.

LuckySalem · 30/08/2010 00:20

Get it double checked.

PLEASE remember that Staffies are VERY hard to rehome so I hope you have homes for all the pups.

I work in rescue and Staffies are the hardest dogs to place, there are LOADS put down each day.

booyhoo · 30/08/2010 00:21
Sad

staffies get such a hard time don't they?

LuckySalem · 30/08/2010 00:22

They REALLY do!!

booyhoo · 30/08/2010 00:24

OP, if she isn't pg, would you consider having her spayed?

MrsRhettButler · 30/08/2010 00:27

i know, am aware of how hard to home they are :( but i have at least 3 very good homes who would take one on each, will call on tuesday and take her to the vet, i'm slightly worried because she is around 5 yrs old and ive heard that can be a bit old to have a first litter? [worried] and the father is staffie x american bulldog, so is bigger than her too

OP posts:
MrsRhettButler · 30/08/2010 00:28

i will if shes not pg now, she is a lovely dog and dp has always wanted a litter from her (dog mad dp alert) but i think shes getting a bit old so will defo get her spayed after this whatever the outcome

That is something that your vet needs to consider as she may have trouble passing the pups.

You also need to be very careful when the dogs are born as that mixture is going to make the pups look like pitbulls which is a definate death sentence if RSPCA take it up.

Staffies will have normally between 3-5 pups apparently sometimes more, sometimes less so keep looking for homes. Idealy if you're going to continue with this then you need to have about 10 homes lined up JUST incase.

ShinyAndNew · 30/08/2010 00:31

Can I ask why you wanted her to have a litter when there are already so many unwanted dogs out there, especially one's of that breed? Also if this was deliberate have both parents been fully health checked? If DP is dog mad it seems an odd thing to do, imo.

Sorry I have been trying not to post, but I failed.

Vallhala · 30/08/2010 00:37

What Lucky said AND what Shiny said.

Plus, if your dog is getting older, it's even more of a worry.

It's all very well having homes for the pups - and I too, as Lucky no doubt remembers, am involved in rescue so know how hard it is to place even purebred SBTs - but that just means that there are another 5 or so dogs who will die in a pound because those who might have otherwise gone to rescue for their pup or dog are instead going to you.

Your vet may recommend a spay and termination now. A terrible thing to consider but so are the number of SBT crosses coming out of pounds in black binliners.

LuckySalem · 30/08/2010 00:39

Hi again Valhalla Grin

MrsRhettButler · 30/08/2010 00:40

lucky.. they have NO pitbull in them, will be 3/4 staff 1/4 american bulldog so will pass any tests, thank you for the info, i will continue to look for homes, we will keep any that don't get homed anyway, i couldn't let them go unless i knew it was a good home but i really doubt at her age/size that she will have that many but i understand what you mean just in case

shiny.. dp wanted a pup that was mix of our two, they are both lovely dogs in temperament and looks, we have always taken on unwanted dogs in the pas and felt that we wanted a puppy for once, both dogs have been checked by vets

LuckySalem · 30/08/2010 00:42

No I understand they have no Pitbull in them but if you google breed legislation bill there is SOO much info about dogs seized as pitbull types that even when proven 100% not to be pitbull they are still PTS.

Vallhala · 30/08/2010 00:45

Hi Lucky, good to "see" you. :)

MrsR, good dogs or not, if you wanted a puppy why not approach rescue? Sorry, i just don't get it.

More to the point, your dog may well NOT pass any tests wrt being considered a PBT "TYPE". that's all the authorities need under DDA legislation. The dog only needs to be considered to be a PBT type, which is very ambiguous in law, to be taken from you, kept in secret kennels for ages and quite possibly killed. It is down to YOU to prove the dog is NOT and it costs a bloody fortune to defend such a charge.

Back in a mo, I want to find something to show you wrt this.

MrsRhettButler · 30/08/2010 00:45

ok, i didn't realise that, i have known people to be allowed to keep pits when they have been able to prove that they are responsible owners so didn't know that other breeds would be taken!

OP posts:
LuckySalem · 30/08/2010 00:46

Im just trying to find you some piccies of the dogs who have been given back after being cleared of being pitbulls

booyhoo · 30/08/2010 00:48

surely if OP has both mother and father dogs she can prove that the pups aren't PBT?

sorry, i don't know about the legislation so am just guessing/hoping.

MrsRhettButler · 30/08/2010 00:49

we have not been able to find any puppies, have checked the dogs home on and off for years now!

i understand the feeling on this subject but dp does not so much, and wanted a puppy from our dog, nothing i could have said would have changed his mind so i just want to do the best i can for mother and pups

OP posts:
LuckySalem · 30/08/2010 00:50

You'd think wouldnt you?

This is why SOOO many people are against breed specific legislation.... Dogs are being seized and put to sleep even with proof that they are NOT pitts.
Those that are returned are returned with horrific injuries/weight loss/behavioural problems and that's AFTER you've paid £100's sometimes £1000's to GET your dog back.

MrsRhettButler · 30/08/2010 00:51

an american bulldog was taken by authorities from our street last month and was given back when proven what she was, they did some tests and she was fine

i'm hoping so booy, i didn't think it would be a problem

LuckySalem · 30/08/2010 00:51

I wish I'd read you wanted a puppy, I work on www.forum.animallifelineuk.org and we have about 100 dogs on our site from various rescues across the UK and I can bet I could find you a staffy puppy or an EBT puppy or a mixture of the 2.

Vallhala · 30/08/2010 00:51

SAVE LENNOX

Scroll down to about halfway and you'll see the story of Lennox, a SBT x Lab x AmBull. Lennox was taken from his home on the basis of his looks having done no harm to anyone and is being held pending court action ON THE BASIS OF MEASUREMENTS OF HIS MUZZLE AND LEGS.

Maria Daines, the owner of the website is a local rock singer and contact of mine, btw.

Back in a moment with another link.
