Alexa has just whispered to me - freaked out.

My Alexa has just whispered to me and I couldn’t understand what it said, I asked her to repeat and she told me there was nothing to repeat. I’ve played it back in the app and it sounded like a male saying “Alexa drop” it’s nobody in our house and we dont use Alexa drop. I have unplugged it but feel (stupidly) frightened by it. My husband is on a nightshift - I don’t think I’ll sleep. My daughter doesn’t seem to think that anyone can just drop in but if it wasn’t that, what was it?

One reason of many I will not get Alexa. We are already enslaved to enough devices as it is: and with Alexa, you are paying to be spied on in your own home.

At the moment, Alexa can be silenced, as can the television (I made good use of the TV "off" switch in 2020). I made a point of not watching the coronation, especially hearing that there would be that part of "everybody pledging allegiance": it feels like the Two Minute Hate. I think that if we are not careful, there may come a time when these devices cannot be silenced. Alexa is a forerunner to the telescreen, as far as I am concerned. And yes, I know... there are many other devices which spy on us all the time, and if I was worried about those, I wouldn't be on Mumsnet. But Alexa feels like a step too far with making these things omni-present, and paying for them.

Our Alexa will randomly fart at us. I think it’s because all we use it for is to fart 🤣

FavouritePJs · 05/12/2025 08:24

@LividArsei am attached to next door so did consider this may be what happened as in playback, the voice did sound distant. I texted my neighbour and she said it wasn’t her but she had visitors last night so it may have been one of them.

This tweet exists for a reason.

I didn’t know you could listen to it again on the app? What do you have to do and does it record all the conversations?

Except for the baby floating in a bubble through space to the Blue Danube which always lifts my heart!

I got no hope at all from it! Glad you got a different perspective though.

FavouritePJs · 05/12/2025 08:28

@BurnoutGPthe same as everyone else, I hold down a job, have kids - who’d have thought it! I was scared, he wasn’t far away, popped back, it’s not a biggie.

Were they Scottish though?

BurntoutGP needs a break from their job. A GP with no compassion is a shit GP. I know this because I happen to have one.

@Bowiesi agree, I am a very anxious person and do overthink things.

My DH is a software developer and cybersecurity specialist and refuses to have an Alexa in the house…

It's all there in that image and really moves me!

I think it records what you say to it? Quite useful as I once got an alert to my phone that my niece was at home trying to order a ton of makeup off Amazon!

RaininSummer · 05/12/2025 08:34

Glad I don't have these devices in the house now. My partner asked me not to get them when I was tempted and now I think he was right.

FavouritePJs · 05/12/2025 08:34

@GoodQueenWenceslausno, I was downstairs at that point by myself, no television on or music playing, just sitting quietly.

If you go into settings it is under Alexa privacy

Years ago now we were staying at my stepdaughters house to look after the children as they had gone away for the weekend.

Her son, who had just turned one, was in his highchair. He kept looking to the corner of the room and babbling away as if he was talking to someone. Nobody there. Totally freaked us out.

It was only when Mum and Dad came back they told us he was trying to make the Alexa work. As you have probably realised we are complete technophobes.

The alexa app should show the history of what has been said!

How do I find this? I didn’t know I could. Just had a look in the app and it wasn’t obvious (to me!)
edit: sorry I see it right above my post 🤦‍♀️

FavouritePJs · 05/12/2025 08:37

@Blizzardofleavesomfg, that sounds terrifying.

I once fell asleep listening to Nirvana on Spotify, and then woke at about 3 am to hear Gregorian chant playing out. Although not remotely paranormal, it was unsettling to say the least!

FavouritePJs · 05/12/2025 08:39

@breezyyyi don’t know and probably won’t ask, atm i can rationalise it by blaming it on them 🤣

Holy crap, some of the things posters are saying Alexa had done 😳 terrifying!!!

On the plus side I had no idea I can check her command and picked up sound history, that’s actually really interesting!

Ahhh OP I’d be just like you especially having watched many haunting/possession type movies. There can only be a Woo Explanation 😁

Well, quite. Mike Zuckerberg allegedly keeps the camera on his laptop taped up. And I'm sure there's a reason that not many politicians drive electric cars; they like to hang on to their wet fuel Jags and Land Rovers, because they know something.
