Morning, all a bit stressful here, FIL has been in and out hospital for a few weeks with a non specific infection and general unwellness, the hospital have called 84 Yr old MIL at 1am to say that he's taken a turn for the worse and could she go in (she's reasonably fit for 84) so DH has just gone over there and I'm here waiting for news...

A hot chocolate and something lovely would be great whilst I wait.

ScottBakula · 19/11/2023 01:35

@TokyoSushi , that must be very stressful, I hope your FIL makes a quick recovery.

@sashh please can I be a bit of a pain and get ravioli on toast , I have been fancying it for a while but at tescos it's £2 a tin !

sashh · 19/11/2023 04:02

Morning.

@TokyoSushi one hot chocolate and I hope good news is on the way, we'll keep you company anyway.

@ScottBakula No problem, I'll get some tinned spaghetti rings out as well for a retro 70s tea time treat.

If we are sticking to the 70s Florence can make a couple of black forest gateaux, Fernando can make some Baby Cham cocktails.

I'm not going to make powdered orange juice, that's a step too far.

I'll stick a couple of vesta curries in the fridge for any late comers.

Morning.

I see the mere threat of powdered OJ has put people off.

I'm having a seat while Florence makes croissants and Fernando can bring me a hot chocolate.

Mummaluma · 20/11/2023 05:36

Morning! Any hot chocolate left?

ScottBakula · 20/11/2023 06:52

Vesta curry's bring back memories, I am glad there is a better choice at the cafe than just that.

Please can I have a couple of warm croissant and a double expresso.

sashh · 20/11/2023 09:20

Hot chocolate, croissants and espresso on their way.

Did anyone watch the TV series, the Indian Dr? An Indian Dr (obviously) and his wife move to a small Welsh village in the 1960s.

At one point they are asked to dinner and are served a selection of vesta curry, specially bought in the city.

Thanks for the pick me up .

No I didn't see that but I can well imagine that kind of thing probably did happen.

My Ddad did not have any kind of curry untill he was married to my DM , ( early 1970 ) not even chippy curry sauce as his mum told him it was ' foreign muck' this went for any food that wasn't traditional British grub so my poor dad grew up on over boiled veg and dried out roast meat or burnt pies.

My mum on the other hand was fed curry, pasta, rice, nam bread chapati , polish food and loads of other 'foreign' food . Though it was pedomanatly because she lived in a very multi culture area and her mum was always in and out of the neighbours homes .

Tilllly · 20/11/2023 20:28

Any news @TokyoSushi ?

Morning.

Well I was awake in the night but managed to get back to sleep.

So I think I fancy beans on toast, with a bit of bacon and cheese. I'll get Florence making a few different breads and Fernando is making tomato juice based cocktails.

Beans on toast with black pepper and grated cheese... food of the Gods

sashh · 21/11/2023 01:33

Morning.

Well it is chilly and dark here but dry, I think I can risk opening the ice rink. Lots of hot drinks including warm milk for any toddlers wanting to try skating (I have crates to push).

I'll do breakfast sandwiches, bacon, sausages, bacon and egg etc so you can take them outside. Florence is making churros and Fernando has gluhwein.

@ScottBakula

I don't think, to this day, my dad has had a curry. He has a real problem with the smell which I get because I cannot stand the smell of grilling tomatoes.

I would have been in my teens when I first had curry.

He only had salmon .last year for the first time when I cooked it for him.

Good morning ,

I wish I could skate but I have the coordination of a drunken 4 Yr old . I am liable to break something so I will sit on the sidelines next to the fire pit ( don't worry the fire pit is not close enough to the ice rink to melt it )
A gluhwein and bacon and egg buttie would be much appreciated.

@sashh when my dad was little his mum use to leave him in his pram outside the fishmongers, he was always violently sick due to the smell , so up untill he was about 40 he couldn't eat fish at all , then very slowly he tried different ones , he could eat tinned tuna , and fish fingers and at a push tinned salmon but nothing else.
When we were kids he worked away from home sometimes , then my mum would make us kippers ,and kedgeree we loved it.

sashh · 21/11/2023 03:55

There's no reason why my dad had not had salmon, I think he just has never thought to buy it, and I think it was expensive in the 70s.

His mother was a good, but very traditional cook, and my dad can cook, I got him an airfryer for his birthday because since my mum died he's been eating a lot of ready meals.

ScottBakula · 21/11/2023 04:09

You are right , i think tinned salmon was seen as luxury/ posh in the 70s , ( tbf it ain't cheep now ! )

When I was a kid he couldn't cook but tbf he work very long hrs and night shifts so wasn't around to cook at the right time.

Though my mum had 2 or sometimes 3 ( during school holidays) part time jobs so God knows how she got food on the table every day.

I feel for your dad , I know it's hard to get the enthusiasm to cook just for one. Perhaps a air fryer recipe book for Christmas may get him back to cooking.

Yes I was thinking about that, the book.

It's only a small air fryer though, so I'll have to be careful. He was here a month or so ago and I had him use my air fryer which is virtually the same.

Then I packed him off with steak and herby butter to cook when he got home.

Morning
A bacon roll and gluhwein please.
I can’t skate either, so I’ll wrap myself in a blanket to watch anyone brave enough to skate.

sashh · 22/11/2023 02:03

Morning.

I feel an indulgent breakfast this morning, smoked salmon and scrambled eggs. Either cold salmon with eggs on the side of eggs with the smoked salmon coked together.

Florence is making soft bread rolls and Fernando has bucks fizz.

OP posts:
MinnieMountain · 22/11/2023 05:38

Morning @sashh .
Smoked salmon cooked into scrambled eggs and Buck’s Fizz please.
It’s my birthday today. Could Florence make me a cake please?
I’m going spend the day here with my book.

Mummaluma · 22/11/2023 06:24

Happy birthday @MinnieMountain! Any nice plans?

@sashh eggs with smoked salmon cakes cooked in would be lovely, with a large cuppa. Long day ahead!

ScottBakula · 22/11/2023 06:54

@sashh smoke salmon and poached eggs please .

Happy birthday @MinnieMountain , I hope you have a nice relaxing morning and some fun later.

sashh · 22/11/2023 07:28

Thank you everyone. I’m going to a spa for the day. Just right for this weather.

ScottBakula · 22/11/2023 18:30

@MinnieMountain
I hope you are now feeling floofed and pampered and have a nice drink and meal now .

@sashh if there are any rolls left please can I have a smoked ham and mustard one please.

sashh · 23/11/2023 02:29

Morning.

@MinnieMountain I hope you enjoyed Florence's cake.

Birthdays are too short so I think we should have a post birthday party, I feel like an afternoon tea, florence will bake some bread, scones and cakes. I'll make cucumber, egg mayo and smoked salmon finger sandwiches.

Fernando has champagne of course, maybe try it in a black velvet.
