OP posts:

Meglet, I used to hang about outside Marc Bolan's house with my mate, who was a fan. That was in the early 70s though.

Annner · 10/05/2010 21:00

Nice slow one to end on. Just like a real school disco.

Meglet · 10/05/2010 21:00

Marc Bolan is way cooler than Luke Goss.

They didn't show Neneh Cherry with her bump did they?

cyb · 10/05/2010 21:00

Do you remember the audience all wore those plastic checked party bowler hats and lobbed balloons around? Even if it was Echo and The BunnyMen in the studio?

I wanted to be there more than ANYTHING

Oohhh ooohhh
makes me wanna dance

ooohh oohh
it's a New romance

Jux · 10/05/2010 21:01

Oh, it's just finished.

DD has just said she wished they still did TOTP. Do you think if we got a MN petition up the BBC would start it up again?

pickledmonkey · 10/05/2010 21:01

they had a clapping soundtrack on every record. it was shite

cyb · 10/05/2010 21:02

Nah, they wouldn't . its all about downloads now.

Jux · 10/05/2010 21:03

You're right. Shame.

BelleDameSansMerci · 10/05/2010 21:05

I've Sky+ed this one... It's not sounding as good as I hoped. I'll look forward to swooning over John Taylor again though.

101damnations · 10/05/2010 21:06

Ah,dh and I have been reliving our youth through this.
The dds were pretty mystified by Boy George, but danced along happily to Dexy's [I still have the 7" of Come On Eileen].

I had a cheeseclothy type pinafore dress like the violinist wore.I'd forgotten all about it 'til now.

Wasn't it Leukaemia that one of Mel and Kim died of?

101damnations · 10/05/2010 21:07

FWIT,dd1 thought that Limahl was a girl and that Nena was a boy.

Tootlesmummy · 10/05/2010 21:10

I thought she died of cancer of the spine? Very sad as she was only 24.

What a great watch though and brings back memories of my youth.......!

Annner · 10/05/2010 21:10

101Dalmations - we're both wrong, it seems!
Mel and Kim

Sidge · 10/05/2010 21:20

Oh I watched this!

It took me back, those happy lunchtimes spent debating with my schoolfriends who were coolest - Wham or Duran Duran. Desperately wanting to have legs like Yazz.

It's my 40th next year and I want to have an 80s party!

cyb · 10/05/2010 21:21

do you remember they used to have some dancers in the studio that were there every week, this was post pans People and Legs and Co. i remember a blonde bloke and a really bad woman dancer who looked like one of Kenny everetts rejects

Tootlesmummy · 10/05/2010 21:22

I'm 40 this year and I want an 80s party!

cyb · 10/05/2010 21:24

see this just would nt cut the mustard in terms of performance now, would it? bleached jeans and a scruffy shirt and a face I want to punch

BelleDameSansMerci · 10/05/2010 21:41

LOL! Cyb...

I'm watching it now and fast forwarding past UB40

Oooooh, Duran Duran. Sigh. John Taylor is still gorgeous - unlike the rest of them. I met Nick Rhodes once (in about 1999) he was so pale he was practically transparant. Bizarre. He took the piss out of my over-eager tosser colleague (male) beautifully however...

BelleDameSansMerci · 10/05/2010 21:42

And, how did I not know that George Michael was gay??

cyb · 10/05/2010 21:44

HE IS NOT GAY

he is dressed as a pilot somewhere, with Andrew Ridgely, just waiting for me

BelleDameSansMerci · 10/05/2010 21:48

I saw him at Wembley Arena (was 8 months pregnant and dancing like a loon) nearly three years ago. I think his "cop" costume is an improvement on the pilot. OMG that man's hips...

101damnations · 10/05/2010 21:54

Thanks Annner. That's so sad isn't it?

pissovski · 10/05/2010 23:01

watched this!! it made me want to go to out at the weekend and sing and dance like someone possessed!!

I was born '77 (Jux - 2 weeks after Marc died, on what would have been his 30th birthday. I love him!) so remembered most of these. Sadly i missed the first few mins (did they play Karma Chameleon?) but I have decided that 1985/6 was ace! Just loved Nena, Feargal Sharkey, Aha, The Communards and Pet Shop Boys.

To be fair, I loved them all then too!!

horseyrider · 11/05/2010 20:32

I thought it was really good on the whole, but went down once the likes of Bros were on. I remember watching A-ha, Madness, all the greats!

pissovski · 12/05/2010 22:19

Horseyrider - completely agreed!

I turned Bros off! Tiffany was ok for naffness value though! Jaw dropped at seeing Morten from Aha in his best days - he was sooooo gorgeous! I was only 8 so didn't see him in 'that' way at the time.
