Undercover Nurse - anyone watching?

Glad I'm not on that ward.

The final straw comes when these elderly patients deteriorate and are brought to ICU to be attached to up to 10 drips and have tubes shoved in every concievable orrifice all in the name of "care".
Undoubtably they recieve THE best most tender loving care available but should not be admitted to us in the first place (age 92 with multiple health problems) but should be as you say Caligula nursed in a hospice or something similar, with peaceful surroundings and dedicated staff.
Probably a whole other thread.

Im going to bed now but thanks for the chat Caligula, its nice to be able to discuss a subject so logically with some one who is respectful in thier musings and thoughts.

i worked in the acute setting for 10 years but eventually i felt 'burntout'. the intensity is so great, long hours because you never finish on time, minimal breaks if u get one at all- and the guilt about not being able to 'care' as you would like to. distress from dealing with the sick and dying every day , dealing with relatives grief- without counselling. (who has time for clinical supervision or reflection). I couldnt cope with it anymore and went into community nursing- equally hardwork and pressured, but more satisfying, when you are with a patient in their own home, you can give them your undivided attention, the quality of care is much better.

As regards the pay- i think nurses should be on a par with the other emergency services- i also think the age entry level should be raised, i was qualified by the time i was 21 but to be honest, i may have been qualifed to do the job but i hadnt the life experience to do the job well. IYSWIM
