Feel really sad for Joan

smallorange · 18/02/2010 22:00

I agree BoF. This is the nice side. You wonder what happens when marriage doesn't work out - he's handy with his fists or has a roving eye.

Shock
Gill79 · 18/02/2010 22:01

That hour went so fast.....

Megletwantsittobesummer · 18/02/2010 22:01

this should have been a 2-parter.

slightlystressed · 18/02/2010 22:02

"lets hope she has a nice life"

I really do too, cos if its shit sounds like she's stuck with it

Heated · 18/02/2010 22:02

Do hope Joan's marriage turns out well - agree with thelunar's dh.

bubbles4 · 18/02/2010 22:03

Its a very shallow look at the travelling community,a lot of us now aspire for our children to set their sights much higher. Our dd has her sights set on law school and is receiving full encouragement.

slightlystressed · 18/02/2010 22:03

right oh over to BBC3 to check out Bianca's wedding

nice daily mail article cranky!

JollyPirate · 18/02/2010 22:05

It was less shallow than I feared it would be but could have taken a more serious look. It couldn't do justice in less than an hour.

shonaspurtle · 18/02/2010 22:05

Yes, I wish her all the luck & happiness in the world.

Must be hard when you've been brought up your whole life to be married and you feel like you're past it at 22...

But then, we don't know how many times she was asked. Maybe she was waiting. Maybe it was love at first sight.

SixtyFootDoll · 18/02/2010 22:05

Thats interseting to know Bubbles, life did seem very limited for the girls on the prog.
Would love to know what happened to them

crankytwanky · 18/02/2010 22:07

Oooh I'm so anxious for her!

Sailorgal, yeah I don't know if there are more here than other parts of the country, although the New Forest has a thriving community.
Where I grew up near Hythe almost everyone had horses. In their garden I mean.

bubbles4 · 18/02/2010 22:07

God help any traveller boy who dishes out domestic violence ,he would fear for his life when his father-in-law got hold of him.

dizzydixies · 18/02/2010 22:08

OMG that was priceless tv, absolutely priceless

southeastastra · 18/02/2010 22:10

for all the shite made on tv, real life really is so much more interesting isn't it

crankytwanky · 18/02/2010 22:15

Didn't notice it was the mail!
At least we are just one click away from knowing what Suri Cruise is wearing.

agedknees · 18/02/2010 22:19

Agree with bubbles totally.

I worked as a midwife in the gypsy community. Could not have worked with nicer people.

Delivered 3 babies in a short space of time. Was visiting them post-natally. My car was a wreck (probably not road worthy at the time). Anyway, on my last visit to the mothers returned to my car to find the men all around it. They had decided it was not safe for me to drive so decided to fix it.

I was really grateful to them.

I loved the programme. Think the hotel that cancelled the wedding should be named and shamed!!!

crankytwanky · 18/02/2010 22:21

It Would be nice to see a whole series on Traveller culture. It's sooo different & complex.

I find the cleaning rituals fascinating, as a slattern.
The women clean all the live long day. There are a strict set of rules, (I forget the Roma word) dictating how things are done, and kosher-style rules like not stepping over a man in bare feet.

The "dirty Gypsy" myth is so far removed from reality to be almost laughable.

GothDetective · 18/02/2010 22:21

I know Bridget, the 16yo who was the first one to get married. Her family live down the road from me and the 2 page boys are in dd's class at school.

The programme talked about them being Irish travellers and for years I assumed from the accents that they were. But an Irish friend of mine met some of the family recently and said that no way did any of them have an Irish accent.

SixtyFootDoll · 18/02/2010 22:21

It was well made.
I was expecting to snort my way through the whole program, sorry if that sounds really bad.
But it really made me see the travelling community in a different light, esp their family values.
I thought the girls were lovely.

2shoes · 18/02/2010 22:23

had to v it half way through.
very interesting and I wish I had them as neighbours.
can't believe that girls wedding venue cancelled, I thought racism was ileagal.

crankytwanky · 18/02/2010 22:24

Agedknees, agree.
I have never met a more helpful or considerate group of people. They generally have an actual sense of community, so wouldn't think twice about helping someone they knew in need.
