If he was my husband I so would have slapped him! He could have took is bloody jacket off too

tartyhighheels · 09/02/2010 22:52

oh my goodness - i am on 4plus1 and steve - i know it's been said but what an asshole!

hobbgoblin · 09/02/2010 23:45

I just came on here specificially to check out the mnet reaction to this programme. That policeman dad was such a Twat! Sorry, but he was. Some serious growing up to do - the son was much better when twatty dad was out the room.

I loved watching but was very, very upset as it brought back memories of DD being born last summer and her heart stopping after similar decelerations. I was sort of getting quite cross with mum for not pushing when the baby was at risk there.

BertieBotts · 10/02/2010 00:06

I have just watched on 4od.

I wonder if Tracy and Steve decided no more children, because of his unsupportive attitude in labour? And then the memories had faded by the time she got pg with this one.

I must admit that I would hate to be filmed in a stressful situation, because I do that laughing thing - I can't help it and I always manage to compose myself in front of people but if I was filmed I'd probably come across as badly as he did However having said that, he really did seem completely emotionless which was the sad thing

I didn't have a caeserean but could empathise with Lisa when she was first told she was having a section and she was saying "I'm going to have a baby in an hour!" - I had planned a home birth and ended up going into hospital, I remember walking through the maternity unit thinking "When I leave this hospital, I'll have a baby" and finding it utterly strange.

Tracy's birth at the end reminded me of my birth with DS - they were also telling me to push very emphatically and I ended up with about 3 midwives and 2 doctors in the room because it was right on shift change. I also couldn't move and ended up pushing him out on my back even though I had wanted to deliver on all fours - they did all pick me up at one point to move me further down the bed so probably could have turned me over. I am wondering now though whether his heart rate dropped at all. They kept going on about how good it was all the way through - was not monitored but midwife kept using doppler thing.

CrosswordGeek · 10/02/2010 00:43

I sooo enjoyed this :D

Don't think that Steve was a twunt, he made me laugh, but it's kind of how my Mum was with me, and I found it an amazing distraction. Some people are just like that, and they obviously love each other. She did say that it was the way they dealt with things. I was properly SCREAMING at the telly when they gave her G&A and she wasn't even in established labour. I wasn't even allowed onto the labour ward until I was 6cm, just got to sit on an antenatal ward screaming my head off.

A friend of mine is 12 weeks pregnant and watched this tonight, think she is truly scared of labour now!

littlemissfixit · 10/02/2010 01:47

sat crying like an idiot at the section, i could remember how that felt and when she said why isnt he crying, I was just like that only she had a little more time to get used to the idea, i had 5 mins! Agree with the masses that copper was a prick. And the son there????? cant wait till next week

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 10/02/2010 01:49

Only read the start of this and only just watched it on 4OD.

But why not have her son there? He was clearly happy to be there.

My (much younger) sister wanted to be at my home birth. Why not?

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 10/02/2010 01:52

I also hope some fecker that can actually make a difference sees this and sorts out maternity care.

JeremyVile · 10/02/2010 02:39

I loved watching this!
So dont want another one but would love to give birth again.
Dont understand all the hostility to the 18yo being in with his mum.
And this Steve person... I would have kicked the shit out of him had I been his wife, but to be fair she seemed alright with it - its obviously just how he is and she found him funny.

bewareofthedog · 10/02/2010 09:05

I'm another one who didn't think Steve was a twat (I've defended him on two posts now...anyone would think we were related!). I think it must have just been the way they are together and it obviously 'works' for them.

When I saw that Tracy's son was with them, I thought what a great relationship they must all have. If I had any more children when ds was older, I'd love it if he felt he'd like to be there.

The main thing I took from the programme is how cold and soul-less the hospital seemed to be. I didn't feel any warmth from the mws (not their fault I'm sure - they were obviously overworked). I had my first in hospital, second at home and the birth experiences were worlds apart.

plus3 · 10/02/2010 09:27

At the beginning Tracy said that she had a huge yearning for another child and convinced Steve to reverse his vasectomy. Sooo (maybe) this child was more wanted by Tracy than Steve, and maybe he was feeling resenful to the baby 'hurting' his wife.

I thought the midwife was very good, especially in the emergency of those decelerations..she remained calm and concise, and there was another midwife in there with her.

Tracy looked absolutely exhausted...to get her to push out her baby without assistence was fantastic.

Will be watching next week.

MegSophandEmma · 10/02/2010 09:38

beware of the dog. It's really not that bad there. I had both dd1 and 2 there almost nine and eight years ago. I was even given a bath with lavender oil whilst in labour with DD2. Where as I had DD3 at Blackpool Victoria Hospital and that place was discraceful. I was seen by a midwife three times during the eight hours I was in labour. Twice to check DD's heart rate with one of the coneshape ear thing, not heart rate monitors and a final time whilst pushing. Ten minutes after she was born I was made to get out of bed and walk up to NOT the postnatel ward, but a ward where women were just going into labour. In comparison, Princess Anne hospital was fab!

MegSophandEmma · 10/02/2010 09:39

Poor Tracey! Her husband was awful, locking her in the loo, WTF?

Midwife clearly very stressed about the heartrate but I did think her saying constantly' Baby has had enough' was not helping. She wasn't very encouraging was she?

Senior midwife seemed a lot nicer (the one that came in at the end).

WorzselMummage · 10/02/2010 11:50

I quite liked Steve tbh and his wife obviously did. I thought he was acting up to the cameras a bit but I thought they had a good relationship, he obviously made her laugh. He had a typical copper sense of humour.

Its very easy to call him a twat but its very difficult for any man to do they right thing when they are supposed to be supportive in labour.. my Df was completly useless during both of my births but is most definatly not a twat ! I'd have welcomed some innapropiate jokes to lighten the mood..

I really enjoyed watching it. I thought it was going to make me desperate for another baby but i just made me think that fuck i'll never have to do it again.

I am glad they didn't just cover straightforward births.

I really like Lisa, i want her to be my friend

ItsGrimUpNorth · 10/02/2010 11:57

I can understand a man not knowing what to do in labour but tickling his wife in mid contraction with a blown up rubber glove? That's just moronic - no two ways about it. I just thought he was tit, taking the p*ss out of his wife's moaning and groaning.

slightlystressed · 10/02/2010 12:07

I was shouting at the telly "PUSH PUSH"! I never shout at the telly! I was getting right into it.

I think the midwife was a bit fed up with them at the end, it must be a really really hard job, how do you tell a woman that the baby has to come out NOW without sounding like a bossy boots.

sincitylover · 10/02/2010 12:44

agree that Steve a total knob if only for wearing his jacket throughout labour.

FabIsGoingToBeFabIn2010 · 10/02/2010 12:53

I really liked Lisa. Does anyone know how the baby is doing?

I didn't like Steve at all nor his wife. She was really annoying me and I wanted to slap her. I was also pushing.

MorrisZapp · 10/02/2010 13:15

Haven't read the whole thread but yes, I agree with most so far. That guy Steve made me thank the good lord above for my intelligent, sensitive DP. What an almighty irritating twat.

I agree, it was sad that not one of them appeared to be encouraging Tracy or praising her - it was if the man was the type who found that sort of thing embarrassing and Tracey wasn't bothered so this must be what he's always like.

But the worst part for me was that Tracy asked for an epidural and wasn't given one - I couldn't see her being given anything else either. Holy crap - if that happened to me I'd be livid. I pay my taxes - if I'm screaming in agony then give me some fucking drugs you bastards!!!

LibrasBiscuitsOfFortune · 10/02/2010 13:59

Whilst I thought Steve didn't come across paticularly well I could understand his attitude much more than Lisas DP who didn't seem interested in the baby at all.

MaryAnnSingleton · 10/02/2010 14:06

lovely Lisa

MaryAnnSingleton · 10/02/2010 14:08

susie - I think the midwife had to be stern - otherwise the poor baby would have been stuck - being a bit stern would show Tracey the gravity of the situation

Sidge · 10/02/2010 14:15

Libra - I thought maybe Lisa's partner looked completely shellshocked. I believe they went for a routine appointment and then got blue lighted up to Southampton, and within hours were told they would be having their baby by CS. Enough to knock most people sideways!

He seemed quite shy too, but then it's hard to tell on the TV really.

I live not far from Southampton and even our local radio station has been discussing this programme and saying what a plonker Steve was!
