"Come dine with me" OMG, Spencer died

I just LOVE CDWM, couple of people I know have been on it. This week's was a classic: young woman living in a mansion with hi-tech kichen but still couldn't cook; down to earth teacher woman with the most bizarre collection of things on walls etc etc . But a nice bunch of people. One guy - Spencer- had said that if he won, he would give his winnings to a cancer charity cos his sister had cancer... he didn't win, but the winner so kindly said she would give half her winnings to said charity

THEN on the messages after the programme, it turns out that Spencer himself died of cancer. So, so sad, seemed like he was just the kind of person you would want at a dinner party and feel so sorry for the family that has been doubly affected by this disease.

I missed tonights episode! Will watch on repeat. How sad

BendyBob · 15/01/2010 18:57

I know! I nearly started a thread too. Poor chap

lilolilmanchester · 15/01/2010 19:07

yeah, he was one of the few people you see on that programme you would actually invite to dinner given the choice.

I know - we felt very sad as well, he seemed lovely and we spent the programme admiring how bright his eyes were. So sad for his family.

I liked it when he was in fits of laughter at that woman's hot pickled onions (as were we)

Honeypeckle · 15/01/2010 19:14

Oh no so sad! Haven't seen tonight's yet

lilolilmanchester · 15/01/2010 19:14

royalty, the very best part of CDWM is when the food snobs come a complete cropper!!!

Honeypeckle · 15/01/2010 20:06

2 of the contestants have set up a charity for Spencer

lilolilmanchester · 15/01/2010 21:04

thanks for this HoneySpeckle. He and Gabrielle were my faves on this show before I knew how things had worked out. I hope his family & friends find some comfort in knowing how well he had come across with fellow diners and TV audience xx

That's sad. I watched all this week's episodes apart from tonight's.

TheFoosa · 15/01/2010 21:24

I watched this earlier, he was diagnosed and died within 2 months

his sister is thankfully recovering

he seemed like a lovely person

TwoIfBySea · 16/01/2010 19:29

I watched this today, taped all the episodes for a Saturday feast and was utterly shocked when it said at the end what had happened as Spencer is the type of person I'd be friends with.

It was a wonderful tribute that his family decided to allow the programmes to go ahead although it must have been terribly hard for them to watch. How lovely that at least three of them are still friends and hold such fond memories of him. I realised at my dad's funeral last spring that if people look back on you with happy, funny stories to tell then you've led a life worthwhile.

bogie · 16/01/2010 20:21

I was so sad when I found out he had died, I will be doing a come dine for Spencer evening soon.

jalopy · 16/01/2010 22:19

How very sad. I love CDWM. Haven't seen this week's. When is the repeat or have I missed it?

bogie · 17/01/2010 22:56

Not sure when/if it will be repeated but if you have Virgin media you can get it for the next few days on catch up tv.

TheFoosa · 18/01/2010 08:27

It's on 4oD

GothAnneGeddes · 21/01/2010 01:46

I taped this and watched it today, I actually gasped at the end, I really was not expecting it at all.

It is nice that the other three are doing some fund raising, though the loaded one does not appear to be involved.

Oh no, how sad

deandra · 24/01/2010 19:55

I have just finished watching CDWM, which I love.
Was shocked and saddened to learn of Spencers' passing shortly after recording the programme.
He seemed like such a warm, friendly and bubbly individual.
It was doubly sad for me as I was recently at the funeral of my sons' paternal grandfather who lost his life to lung, liver, kidney and bowel cancer within 4 months of diagnosis.
Cancer shows no mercy.
R.I.P Spencer. R.I.P Mr G. Peace. X
