Thanks for the reminder. Saw the second half last week, and was just wondering what to watch.

Have to wait for DH to come home to watch Hustle.

Alambil · 11/01/2010 21:04

That kid in france wouldn't have lunch if she was with me...

(DS was a very stubborn eater when he was younger and only tonight I did the "eat it or have nothing; you ate it last week so I Know you like it!" so know how hard it is to keep firm)

I am - thats a very big portion of dinner.

I find it interesting that in the same family, some children can be within average weight ranges yet oanother might be over weight. Does this mean that genetics do play a part in weight?

Alambil · 11/01/2010 21:10

yes, herbie; that is true... just added that to stop the "you don't know what a kid saying "no" is like" stuff

Alambil · 11/01/2010 21:11

I don't know chickens - I guess somewhat, but my sister and I are obese, my parents aren't (well, dad is but that's purely medical) and DS isn't (and won't be if I have any control over it!)

OP posts:
satc2bringiton · 11/01/2010 21:11

I've always been quite tough on the kids with dinner and lunch - its always eat it or nothing. Alot of my friends are quite shocked at that, but I dont have time to make alternatives and am not going to start!

Alambil · 11/01/2010 21:14

if DS genuinely doesn't like something, he gets one alternative but if he won't even contemplate trying it to find out or is being plain awkward, it's nothing

I can understand children, like adults, not liking all foods, but a blanket "no" to fruit and veg is pushing it a bit!

Some children are just a lot more interested in food than others - it's like they are genetically programmed to eat ! But it is up to parents to control that, and it can be done.

ChickensLoveMarmite · 11/01/2010 21:16

My family are all on the skinny side, in fact it wasn't until I had children that I was classed as a healthy weight. Didn't matter what I ate, I never seemed to gain anything. Now I see the same in my eldest son. He is very slender, yet never stops eating. The child eats more than I do at most meals. Yet my youngest son is a healthy weight, and picks at his food. I give them the same things, so it's not a difference in their diet. DH finds it easy to gain weight, and I suspect that DS2 will be the same as an adult. I assume it's a metabolism thing? Although it does seem like some of the over weight children in this programme are eating a huge amount.

satc2bringiton · 11/01/2010 21:16

Yeah - kids have to keep trying. DS1 is 9 and he is starting to discover things he previously said he didnt like, he does now like.

I agree Lewisfan. There us something wrong if a child doesn't want to eat any fruit !!!

satc2bringiton · 11/01/2010 21:21

All the families I have seen in this so far though do have overweight parents.

Im overweight (size 18), so im not just assuming big parents, big kids. It's just makes me feel

ChickensLoveMarmite · 11/01/2010 21:21

Oh, I agree. Everyone has food they don't like. I would retch if someone tried to make me eat marrow .

ChickensLoveMarmite · 11/01/2010 21:22

X-post.

Alambil · 11/01/2010 21:23

satc; me too (great name!) ... I am hearing a lot of excuses on this show though

And I'm not one to talk; ds's diet is relatively healthy, but I could do better and I will... am on the road to recovering my mental health and I'm sure things will improve

OP posts:
Alambil · 11/01/2010 21:26

oh dear that's tragic... poor, poor Bethany stands no chance

OP posts:
satc2bringiton · 11/01/2010 21:26

thanks Lewisfan

Yes, there are lots of excuses.

All kids should be able to have treats, but it's all about balance, which is what seems to be missing here.

JamieJay · 11/01/2010 21:27

Watching it but keep having to mute it to avoid throwing something at the screen!!

ChickensLoveMarmite · 11/01/2010 21:28

Agree, Lewisfan All this talk of 'eating what makes you happy' is quite worrying, too.

KickKnack · 11/01/2010 21:28

god this programme is making me alternate between anger, despair and pure sadness
