I'm looking forward to this. I love a good scare, though it can't possibly be as terrifying as 'The Polar Express' which is currently on ITV2 +1.

Will anyone else be watching this tonight?

I am properly scared now.

LymeBayToEbay · 30/12/2009 22:24

Ending's the same then.

saltyseadog · 30/12/2009 22:29

Sheesh - I physically shivered when the guard turned to Quint.

Not bad, not bad.

They stated clearly things that were only hinted at in the book. Which lost a bit of the sublety but still good.

JaneiteQuiteRight · 30/12/2009 22:44

It looked great but laboured things a bit and wasn't especially scary (and I am a wimp). Agree that the girl had too much makeup on but I loved her collection of headbands.

Docbunches · 31/12/2009 09:42

I was a bit disappointed with this... not all that scary, and I'm also a complete wimp. My DP said the creepiest thing was the background crow noises!

Agree about the superb acting of Sue Johnston from the Royal family - she out-acted everyone in this by miles - including the very pretty lead actress, who I wasn't particularly impressed with. Kids were great as well.

OrmIrian · 31/12/2009 09:45

No it wasn't as scary as the book. The book implies all kinds of depravities which seem worse for not being spelt out. And the evil was brooding and sickening, not obvious and violent.

tinalane · 31/12/2009 10:00

I really enjoyed it!

I noticed the girl had a lot of makeup too.

The last bit made my spine tingle (which is good).

Afterwards I felt mildly scared for a short while (this house has ghosts too).

But it was all ok by bedtime.

Excellent! I must read the book asap!

LIZS · 31/12/2009 10:11

More creepy than I had expected. Somehow I never read the book, although have other HJ and am sure I have it in a box somewhere, hwo close is it ?

Georgimama · 31/12/2009 11:34

From your descriptions, I'm so glad I wimped out of watching this. I think OrmIrian sums up the book brilliantly - you just know there is something horrifically depraved and sickening going on, but you just don't know what.

SlartyBartFast · 31/12/2009 11:55

confused a bit by this. why did they let the governess stay in the house with the boy when she had been caught slapping him??

did she actually kill him by gripping him tightly?

why did the ghosts want the children to die?

OrmIrian · 31/12/2009 12:02

I expect she would have been told to leave but while the housekeeper was comforting Flora she heard the string of adult obscenities that were coming from the ghost governess and realised that something was up. Governess wasn't just mad.

She didn't kill him by gripping him - in the book it isn't made clear but it seems to suggest that the struggle between the will of Quint and the will of the governess killed him.

I don't think so - they wanted them alive so they could live through them. But he wasn't prepared to be forced out of the house.

SlartyBartFast · 31/12/2009 13:16

ah i see.

Woman in Black still chills me to the bones.

Love ghost stories

KurriKurri · 31/12/2009 13:51

Agree they didn't need to spell everything out so much. I enjoyed it though. What else has the litle girl been in? she looked familiar.

biglips · 31/12/2009 13:53

i throughly enjoyed this last night and at times i could feel my heart was thumping loud!!

littlerach · 31/12/2009 13:56

It was better than I thought it would be, but it was too obvious compared to the book.

Liked the ending.

JaneiteQuiteRight · 31/12/2009 14:18

I think I will read it now: never read any HJ.

spookycharlotte121 · 31/12/2009 15:23

that was scary

have just watched it on iplayer..... so spooked out now!

Wallace · 31/12/2009 15:36

I only lasted 15 minutes

I just can't do scary...

Docbunches · 31/12/2009 16:56

Think the young girl was in Eastenders (but I could be wrong).

WhatFuckingYearIsItAnyway · 31/12/2009 17:09

here she is, Flora

KurriKurri · 31/12/2009 18:06

Ah thank you - think it must have been the Lewis I saw her in.
