Anyone else watching the crap that is Day of the Triffids?

It is really rubbish the triffids are like the spooky trees from snow white! And how handy that the two people who could see were from the oil company who caused it and a radio presenter who could broadcast to everyone!

Yes and it is truly appalling.

But dp is watching it and I am on here so cant really complain.

MyCatIsABiggerBastardThanYours · 28/12/2009 22:12

Me! I've just come on here to see if anyone was scared of the walking asparagus or not.

MyCatIsABiggerBastardThanYours · 28/12/2009 22:13

It's the annual christmas comedy show.

magnolia74 · 28/12/2009 22:14

Dh is making me

RustyBear · 28/12/2009 22:17

I'm a massive John Wyndham fan, but I've turned it off - in some ways it is more true to the original than previous adaptations, but it doesn't really work, not sure why.

In the book, Bill Mason was a triffid expert, and the triffid sting was the reason he didn't see the flares (so not a really unbelievable coincidence) but Josella was a very minor sleb and the author of a 'sexy' novel who was 'saved' because she'd spent the night passed out after a drunken binge....

I remember watching the '80's version and whilst feeling scared of the whole story and premise, I laughed at the plants then. It's a shame that in times of such brilliant special effects, we have obvious rubber plants that throw goo at you on this series.

HellBent · 28/12/2009 22:22

And why are the blind people walking about in the streets like zombies? If this happened to me I'd stay in my house and eat all the food before leaving!

DH has it on, what a load of shite it is.

MyCatIsABiggerBastardThanYours · 28/12/2009 22:28

I revise my description. They're more like a big iris.

Chuffinnora · 28/12/2009 22:36

dh watching on sky+ delayed start. Why do they have to forage for food? why not just go to Tesco et al for all the packets, jars and frozen stuff there? Bonkers.

Georgimama · 28/12/2009 22:36

I thought they looked a bit like purple sprouting broccolli. Didn't stop me being mildly scared though . Eddie Izzard is marvellously sinister.

The plants weren't terribly scary (like the way the trailer for next week shows some hint of right on empathy for the plants to come "mother nature reasserting control" etc) but what I find sinister about these things is the total breakdown - terrified children who can't see their parents 10 yards away etc. Before I had DS such thoughts would not have been an issue to me.

HellBent · 28/12/2009 22:41

Eddie Izzard was very good from what I saw, DP is planning on watching the second part tomorrow, apparently I didn't like it as I was MNing not concentrating!

I was so petrified of the version in the early 80s, but maybe it's the wisdom of old age or just crap special effects but I can't get scared of walking plants... deadly sting or no deadly sting. They do look like purple sprouting broccoli don't they?

I do think the disintegration of society is a bit over done... what's happened to all those coppers who were off shift and were sleeping? Come to think of it, there are probably a lot of people from the forces etc who were sleeping during the meteor shower thingy. Where were they all?

If I were on nights I know I wouldn't bother getting up for something like that, no matter how much it was hyped up.

Surely there were government or Whitehall bods who couldn't leave their stations to watch some silly shooting starts or whatever?

Pantofino · 28/12/2009 23:56

A lot of it is twaddle, and they have changed the story from the book, and the original tv adapation. But I have to agree with HellBent that Eddie Izzard is fab! He makes such a good meany! I think he has missed his vocation til now.

I mentioned to dh that Dougray Scott seems to look old all of a sudden. DH said that he must have got married! .

Pantofino · 29/12/2009 00:00

HeadFairy, I commented that when "Jo" woke up in the underground, where was everyone? Surely the tube would have been filled with grumpy people who had to get to work, or didn't succumb to the hype. I must reread the book. It has been many years....

sphil · 29/12/2009 00:02

I enjoyed it.

Though nothing will match up to the fear I felt aged 14 when reading the description of the blind people milling round and round the hospital hallway, gradually crushing each other

cornsilkcremeeggspotter · 29/12/2009 00:04

I liked Joely's boots but didn't get a good look at them. I really wanted a close up.
Eddie Izzard looked hot.

cornsilkcremeeggspotter · 29/12/2009 00:05

And what about all the people who worked nights and were asleep?

DarrellRivers · 29/12/2009 00:06

Great Christmas fare
Although, there surely would have been about 1 in 5 of the population who didn't watch the shower, were just miserable or asleep or drunk
And how lucky that the other seeing person you bumped into was your age, good looking and an expert.

sphil · 29/12/2009 00:07

And prisoners - wouldn't they have been in lock-up (if that's the phrase) during the solar show?

In fact, if you think about it, there would have a load more sighted people around...

cornsilkcremeeggspotter · 29/12/2009 00:09

although they may have pretended to be blind to avoid hanging out with Joely?
