I am a mother of 2 children who model. My DS is 3.5 and has been modelling since he was 9 months and my DD is 6 months and has been modelling since she was a couple of weeks old.

I watched this out of interest to see how the industry was being portrayed. I think the parents that they used for this dicumentary were extreme examples. I actually thought Esther may seriously be on drugs!! She seemend very deluded and I got the feeling that she was clinging on to some desire of her own that needed to be fulfilled which is not a good reason to pursue this hobby.

Matey up North was the worst though!! He should get off his lazy backside and get himself a job rather than try to rely on his triplets to carry his worthless a**!

The mothers with Frankie seemed nice though. They just loved their boy to bits and were so proud to see him in print and to be honest who wouldn't? I am proud any time my DC's are in print, but at the same time I am proud of them both no matter what and modelling certainly doesn't define them. DS enjoys the experience very much. We live in Essex and he finds the ride in to London very much an adventure, particularly going past Stratford and seeing the Olympic park developing with all the diggers etc. We tend to make a day of it and I truly believe that exposure to different people has helped with his confidence.

He does however have other interests, rugby training, riding his bike / scooter, learning Spanish and we certainly do not sit around waiting for the phone to ring! The work is also pretty sporadic. DS has had numerous castings and 4 jobs during this time and should he wish to stop I would happily discontinue and the same with my DD who has also had 4 jobs.

I do not feel my children are exploited, they are paid well and any money they earn is paid in to their own bank account. Even on jobs out of London where you are given travel expenses, I never take a penny and it all goes in to their account.

With regards to airbrushing, can't really see the problem. At the end of the day companies are trying to sell a product. It's not as though children are being hurt in any way and most of the time jobs are licensed too to ensure exploitation does not take place.

pigleychez · 21/10/2009 12:20

The main thing i learnt from the programme was not to belive a thing you see in the magazines. They are all fake, airbrushed images!

I really dont see the need to airbrush a photo of a baby. They were airbrushing skin folds- Its a baby!. Babys have rolls of chubby skin.. thats the joy of babies!

Personally I dont think much of the Mother and baby magazine with thier fake model mummy and baby and Practical parenting with the airbrushed baby. Think they came across in a bad light.

EyeballsintheSky · 21/10/2009 12:29

I know, I have both those magazines, particularly remember Frankie's one because DD demanded the Night Garden book! I feel a bit cheated even though my sensible head knows that they are all models.

The programme obviously gave us the nutters although I liked Frankie's parents as well and I'm sure that most people who do it are perfectly sane and normal. I just am uncomfortable with people bringing in tiny babies and putting them before some advertising exec who will reject them because they're not cute enough.

bigmummal1 · 21/10/2009 12:33

to be honest virtually all advertisments have a fake mum, not just these magazines. The concept is to sell products whatever they may be.

You should never believe wholeheartedly what you see in magazines, tv or anywhere come to that. Companies have an agenda and that is to make money. Sad it may be, but that is the way it is.

breastsofjordan · 21/10/2009 12:39

I watched it. It all seemed rather workaday and normal. Yes they'd deliberately picked a ranty mum, triplets and a lesbian couple, but they still all came across as relatively normal.

I can't see how people didn't realise magazine pics are air - brushed! How else do you get a professional result?

bigmummal1 · 21/10/2009 12:40

Eyeballsinthesky,

i know what you mean, but in order to sell products firms need to use real babies. If it is a no from a casting or a final image isn't used, I certainly don't take it personally, they may just require a different look. You really can't take it to heart as though your child is being rejected.

ParisFrog · 21/10/2009 12:42

My DS is 3.5....He does however have other interests, rugby training

ruddynorah · 21/10/2009 12:43

hadley's in the boden ad that appears on the right side of the screen sometimes isn't he? wearing the choo choo t shirt?

ruddynorah · 21/10/2009 12:44

isn't it?

sweetkitty · 21/10/2009 12:45

Esther was barking mad, you would at least throw all the crap in a cupboard if TV cameras were coming round.

Little Frankie was gorgeous though

Triplets Mum and Dad felt sorry for them, I did wonder if they were naturally conceived or fertility treatment, imagine going for number 3 and getting 3, 4 and 5? Agree Dad should get off his a* and get a job though

southeastastra · 21/10/2009 12:46

bigmamma i didn't think they were extreme at all - you're coming across a bit rabid though

bigmummal1 · 21/10/2009 12:52

southeastastra - sorry what do you mean by rabid, pardom my ignorance?

parisFrog - yes, DS does rugby training. it's not "full on rugby", just training. they run at the tackle bag. Just a bit of fun I thought.

I didn't see the programme but I did see the bonkers woman Esther and Hadley on BBC breakfast yesterday morning.

Was she like that all the time?

At the time I did think "MN will have a field day watching the prog"

southeastastra · 21/10/2009 13:26

you accused esther of being on drugs and deluded!

bodycolder · 21/10/2009 13:28

hadley jack sounds like a pint of cider!

NorbertDentressangle · 21/10/2009 13:28

oh god, I thought you meant me for a minute SEA! Brief moment of panic when I thought I'd posted something awful without realising.

Housemum · 21/10/2009 13:33

I thought it was a reasonably fair portrayal of what goes on, but agree that they were extreme examples of mums-of-models in the same way that you could have shown a documentary about kids who go to pre-school and said that these were typical mums. They had interesting stories, and different lifestyles/opinions, that makes for better television.

Housemum · 21/10/2009 13:35

By the way I'm pleasantly surprised at the MN comments, last time I put my head above the parapet to defend mums whose kids model, I was shot down in flames as being a grasping pushy mother who was living her dreams vicariously. Though in fewer syllables and with more offence... )

Frankie is seriously beautiful. And I'm not particularly gooey over babies but he really is. His mums were so proud of him and seemed lovely.

yes it was frankie i meant IYSWIM!! he is gorgeous. now when i see those pics i imagine his mums doing all those silly things behind the camera to get him to smile. how funny was it when the grandparents all trudged up to the house to see the magazine! in a house already festooned with venture portraits of the child a much much adored little boy.
