Looks interesting! Anyone going to watch it with me? I am all alone tonight.

In the third programme investigating the effectiveness of healthcare products, Professor Lesley Regan looks at the children's market. She begins by examining claims about the benefits of various foods, before testing whether classical music can improve intelligence. The world of educational toys is also explored, and the marketing campaign behind formula milk is put under the microscope

Someone's just drawn my attention on breast and bottle feeding and I'm planning to watch it too.

McDreamy · 30/04/2009 20:45

Oh good I won't be alone then!

Hmm wasn't expecting that! Thought cereals would be slated.

Wonder if Fruit Shoots will be next

MamaHobgoblin · 30/04/2009 21:22

I see Fruit Shoots!

ilikeyoursleeves · 30/04/2009 21:25

I'm not watching it as DH is watching the recession programme on Ch4... What were they saying about the cereals? What ones are actually good for kids?

BigBellasBeerBelly · 30/04/2009 21:40

Glad there is a thread!

Amazing about cereals...

Can hear the sound of millions of parents all over the country relaxing

sleeves they said even things like frosties fine, don't worry about the sugar, it's getting the child to eat brekkie every day that matters. Aim for no more than 17g (!!!) of sugar for brek every morning. That's stacks!!!

BigBellasBeerBelly · 30/04/2009 21:46

Oooh formula....

ilikeyoursleeves · 30/04/2009 21:47

Ah good. My DS adores Shreddies, were they considered to be Ok then? He could eat the whole packet if he tried!

McDreamy · 30/04/2009 21:49

It's not the cereal that's important, what's more important is getting your children into the habit of eating breakfast every day. It doesn't matter what. I wasn't expecting that - keep eating the Shreddies!

McDreamy · 30/04/2009 21:50

But don't worry about exposing them to classical music - it does nothing!

Breast is best, no surprises there.

But was interested to see the presenter say they had got some "home produced milk" for testing, rather than breast milk. Seemed a bit odd!

SnortyBartFast · 30/04/2009 22:00

funny.
am feeling rather smug about the lack of vtec toys we had
the predominance of lego
and stacking cups

and of course the fact that we didnt go the Mozart route

BigBellasBeerBelly · 30/04/2009 22:05

Forgot I paused when DH got in from work and was wondering how you all knew the answers ahead of me!

Was worried I wasn't getting enough fish oils

PortoPandemico · 30/04/2009 22:06

Oh no! I was going to record this!

PortoPandemico · 30/04/2009 22:08

So, reading the posts:

Eating in breakfast is fab, even it it might be a bit sugary?

Vtech is unnecessary?

Lego is good?

Oh great, I am a fab parent after all!

SnortyBartFast · 30/04/2009 22:08

i did try the omega fish oils admittedly
professor winston

suggested it.

SuziSeis · 30/04/2009 22:10

agree i was loving it!!

OOh what did she say about breakfasts?

BigBellasBeerBelly · 30/04/2009 22:14

Porto correct.

Give them any old crap for brekkie, as long as they eat it

Vtech is awful, I have a science degree and I literlly looked like this for ten mins when they realised that for the child to input the number 18 into the machine, they had to put the 8 in first. ie put 81. again...

Cheese strings came out well...

Missed lego.

Ditch baby mozart.

Playing a musical instrument before age 7/8 does seem to have an effect on the brain. personally I would think that any hobby requiring practice thought and discipline etc would fulfil this but on this program playing an instrument is the definite.

I haven't got to the end yet! Will find about lego soon no doubt...

SuziSeis · 30/04/2009 22:17

i think reading music is good!

I am such a puritan with toys

why would 'lights and sounds' stimulate imagination ???

SnortyBartFast · 30/04/2009 22:18

oh oh,
playing with boxes.
one of the BEST Toys in the World

PortoPandemico · 30/04/2009 22:19

Well mine generally has a strawberry actimel and a chocolate chip brioche for breakfast. She has a tonne of lego. I shall buy her a recorder and consider it job done!

BigBellasBeerBelly · 30/04/2009 22:20

My toy criteria is never but anything I don't want to play with myself!

Seems to make sense...

BigBellasBeerBelly · 30/04/2009 22:21

but = buy FFS

we have lots of duplo

SuziSeis · 30/04/2009 22:21

like your style big bella

elkiedee · 30/04/2009 22:21

DS1 enjoys Vtec toys but I think it's a question of them being fun, I don't really look at "educational" claims.

His CM is great for teaching him things but I also think he that at almost 2, he's learning constantly from everything going on in his life.
