"there's some nice ham in the fridge"

it was very bad though, had to turn off

mollyroger · 25/04/2009 11:16

lol @ nice ham

SEA - us too. I had reservations anyway because i adored the original so much. But is was too, too dire. And the awful laughter everytime anyone said anything.

Saltire · 25/04/2009 11:17

it didn't appeal to me, usually I like Martin Clunes, but not this time

NoBiggy · 25/04/2009 11:20

Yes, smiled at the nice ham.

But it was so lacking in whatever made the original so special.

PuppyMonkey · 25/04/2009 11:22

I don't get the "nice ham" bit... but I did fall asleep while watching last night. Zzzzzzzz. Horrible laughter track, I thought.

LauriefairycakeeatsCupid · 25/04/2009 11:23

nice ham?

don't gettit

NoBiggy · 25/04/2009 11:25

Presumably the "laughter track" was the studio audience.

Maybe they got them pissed and whipped into a frenzy before the take?

PuppyMonkey · 25/04/2009 11:27

That's the only explanation I can think of NoBiggy...

Numberfour · 25/04/2009 11:40

i'm also lost on the "nice ham" line. Anyone?

i watched for about 5 minutes. ridiculous. i don't know the original. just plain old stupid, really.

mrsmaidamess · 25/04/2009 11:42

I have been to recordings of TV comedy and whilst you do get a free bottle of beer before hand, it would in no way reduce you to a giggling heap at a lame sitcom joke.

It's MN mythology.

Look for the shopping list thread in classics.

I'm glad I'm not the only one to have grinned at that!

retiredgoth2 · 25/04/2009 11:48

...the original was funny, but very much of its time.

Leonard Rossiter played the role with an apocalyptic glee. There was the sense of his being millimetres from screaming insanity.

.....Martin Clunes just looked smug.

I watched 15 minutes of last night's episode. At that point I realised that I was 900 seconds closer to my death, and that watching this dire bilge seemed to be hastening my journey toward that end...

Tick....tick.....tick....

I smiled at Nice Ham

didn't like it though, can't bear canned laughter

mrsmaidamess · 25/04/2009 11:56

I'm sure he said on Jonathan Ross it was filmed in front of a live studio audience.

retiredgoth2 · 25/04/2009 11:58

...the audience may well have been live.

However, I would suggest that they are a little less so for having sat through this gut wrenching nonsense....

MrsJamin · 25/04/2009 12:02

It was when his 2 colleagues suggested a new razor for the self-harm market that DH and I just couldn't take it any longer and switched over. I loved the original, I can't imagine why or how they think they're going to recreate the same feeling on this.

LauriefairycakeeatsCupid · 25/04/2009 12:03

thanks for explaining nice ham, I remember the shopping list thread.

I'd thought it was about the original reggie which is why I didn't get it

mollyroger · 25/04/2009 12:27

lol retiredgoth.
Maybe the audience had been let out for the day....

Latchley · 25/04/2009 15:38

I too found it utterly unwatchable; didn't even make it to the nice ham bit. I cannot understand how anyone involved thought it could possibly work...

IotasCat · 25/04/2009 15:48

We switched over after a few minutes

katiestar · 05/05/2009 20:52

Very disappointing. I know David Nobbs (writer of original and co-writer of remake). He seemed quite upbeat about the rehearsals but bumped into him shortly before it was broadcast and he was very concerned about the final product (although I think he thought MC was good.)Cannedlaughter was awful!
Absolutely can't see the point in remaking a masterpiece.Just show us re-runs !!
