Sorry I haven't read all this thread or last week's but can anyone tell me; last week when they had to get orders for their product are they REAL orders or just hypothetical (sp) ones?
I say real orders and DH says not.

spenthen · 16/04/2009 20:48

I think Lorraine might be Emma Thompson in disguise.

BocciBalls · 16/04/2009 22:02

seriouscase - they are not real orders. Friend of mine was part of one of the companies playing along last year and it is just pretend!

littlepollyflinders · 16/04/2009 23:52

Just watched the episode and have had very grave thoughts about what it says about business ie you can work well, make a good product, sell it well but if you fuck up in the details, ie the costings then you may as well not bother - whereas those that performed badly, made a crap product, sold it badly got rewarded because their sums were correct.
All that made me feel positively queasy about the world we live in.
If I were Suralan I would have told them they didn't deserve their treat.

But then - I did big turnaround and realised how clever the little gnome really is. And the producers of course.
They are making good telly because by the end we will be left with a bunch of horrid nasty people and be choosing between who is the least detestable and obnoxious.

They are all a bunch of arrogant, smug idiots who think that you can go to business school and apply ways of doing things to all types of business where Suralan is clearly trying to show us that if you don't really know a particular business inside out from the bottom up then you have no chance of really succeeding in it.

I say respect to the man!

I don't like Ben. what the hell has "Well I've been offered a scholarship at Sandhurst" got to do with anything???

He may as well have said "Oh well you do know that Mr kipling mades exceedingly good cakes"

prat.

seriouscase · 17/04/2009 00:36

Thanks BBalls. Guess I'll have to admit DH is right!

bambipie · 17/04/2009 08:41

It is all a bit unrealistic because they are only ever pitching for a one off sale - never interested in return customers. So they have to think about max profit at first rather than growing a business with lots of repeat customers, quality can't be their top priority. I think they were following recipes for the cosmetics and just selecting the fragrances from a list. I still can't work out if was a mistake between cedar/sandalwood or putting 3g in instead of 3%?

TrillianAstra · 17/04/2009 10:02

Mr Kipling does indeed.

lunamoon2 · 17/04/2009 10:06

Bambiepie- I think it was the general cost of the Sandalwood.
Ceadarwood was much cheaper.
The sandalwood cost something like £1750 per kilo and they bought 450 grammes of it therefore cosing approx £800 just for that one ingredient. If they had stuck to ceadarwood it might have cost £50? (cannot remember the actual cost but much, much cheaper).

I thought it was rather noble of Nick to point their mistake out to them. Even when he did they still didin't sit down and work out how much they needed to sell the product for so as not to make a loss!

Really very basic maths that if you sell somethging for less than it cost to make, then you are going to make a loss!!!!!

Mind you I do have a mathematical mind and the more I see of the cretins on this show, the more I feel like applying for the job myself! What do you think?

lunamoon2 · 17/04/2009 10:10

Still loved the earlier shows best.
Can anyone remember James, very posh, and Shaira? (not spelt right?) selling the wearwolf coats on the QVC type programme????

Or the ones selling the collapsable wheelchairs?

Classic tv.

MARGOsBeenPlayingWithMyNooNoo · 17/04/2009 19:44
