coleens real women - bit of an AIBU

Did anyone see this last night on ITV

There was a very beautiful mixed race girl on and they repeatedly referred to her 'wide, large' nose as a problem and that they needed to disguise it.

She said that her father was from jamaica.

ive seen the show before and they often talk about people not being as tall or skinny as a professional model but ive never heard them refer to so much as this.

Her nose was very similar to one of my little boys (also mixed race) and it just seemed really inappropriate to keep going on about it.

Anyway - ive put in a comment about it. Not a major ranting complaint but did say i felt uneasy watching it. AIBU?

x

no I don't think you are, but presumably they were jealous!
I assume this was a makeover thing, they weren't just talking about it out of the blue?!

Hi - it was the 'experts' who kept referring to it - not the other contestants x

Re: Why are there no REAL black women on the show? - Superdrug episode - 'Your nose is too broad!'

Hi, I just wondered if anyone found it in the least bit offensive that on the superdrug campaign episode the lady that was of mixed heritage (black and white i believe) can't remember her name...the pretty one who had the child who was one of the final three - was told her nose looked too broad. Too broad compared to what is what I would ask...a white nose? This idea of people from a black background having too broad a nose is laden with all sorts of racist historical representations of people who were not white and I am unsure whether Colleen or Camilla realised this when they were constantly brought it up as a negative in regard to this ladies looks. If they wanted everyone to have the same features, then perhaps they should consider reconceptualising their show? I enjoy this show usually but this made me feel very uncomfortable! This is simply my opinion...what do you guys think? x

lyds86 i agree. It made the show seem really deceptive. Its meant to be real women yet they chose to photoshop her nose to make it narrow, this is hardly real is it?!

She was stunning and her nose was not wide but they do always do the bit where they make suggestions to the contestants as to how they would photograph best (which angles etc.). They kept going on to the other girl last night about how they needed to make her look younger because she looked old and I've heard them talking about hiding big chins, "manly" features etc.

kizzie · 25/03/2009 15:28

yes thats true - they did say about the other girl needing to look wonder.

I just felt uncomfortable with them referring to something so frequently that was clearly linked to her heritage.

But then i guess you could say the same thing about someones chin !?

sorry, I thought you meant loose women - got confused!

Yes, I saw it. Was also pretty appalled TBH. It's an obvious racial characteristic which combined with her other features to make her look what she was - a stunningly beautiful mixed-race woman! (It's almost like saying a black women can't be truly beautiful unless she has a caucasian nose). I couldn't believe they kept going on about it! Especially as the show is about 'real' (as opposed to photoshopped) women!!!

that exactly how i felt about it independiente
