Is it good, expat? I'm really interested in this period and am hoping 'The Tudors' carries on for a while to see how they handle the succession act etc.

I'm currently reading the Antonia Fraser Mary Queen of Scots I got a set of her stuff for christmas and am working through it.

Expat - have you read Alison Weir's biography of Isabella, wife of Edward II? I read it on holiday a couple of years ago and found it very good - still got her Eleanor of Aquitaine one to get through though.

AMAZING! I didn't know about this but i am over the moon!
thank you so much for sharing!
woopee!!

expatinscotland · 28/02/2009 12:23

Yes, it's a good tome, A Daughter's Love. Not as flowery as his Mary, Queen of Scots biography, thankfully.

I've read all of Weir's tomes, Northern. . Good stuff!

TheOldestCat · 28/02/2009 16:18

I'm reading Katharine Swynford at the moment by Alison Weir - tis an interesting account of a remarkable woman.

Hi

Isn't it historically inaccurate? They killed his sister off in season 1 and in reality she outlived Henry??? Things like that bother me, as I think its like the generation that's going to grow up thinking only Americans fought on D Day!

That and I'll never forgive the lead actor for his portrayal of Elvis (Golden Globe my arse!) Which was also inaccurate!

Goes back to watching the Thorn Birds

TheOldestCat · 01/03/2009 08:59

True true, AnnieK - they actually amalgamated his two sisters into one convenient sibling so I don't think historical accuracy has ever been its thing. I do enjoy it though

expatinscotland · 01/03/2009 09:52

'I don't think historical accuracy has ever been its thing.'

No doubt. 16th century men tended to be rather chauvinist bastards, something that probably wouldn't have gone over well with 21st century female audiences.

And Thomas More's children were all long-grown at the time of his execution. In fact he was a grandfather several times over at the time.

TheThoughtPolice ? there' a trailer for series three on YouTube - plus behind the scenes with Joss Stone who's playing Anne of Cleeves. Hope this link works

do we know if the Tudors will end with Henry VIII or will it go on to show Edward, Jane, Mary and Elizabeth's reigns too? Cos in particular Mary and Elizabeths reigns would be very interesting and dramatic .... ;)

I mean the series STARTED with Henry VIII yet we all know he wasn't the start of the Tudor lineage.

SomeMightSay · 16/03/2009 02:23

Sooooo excited. I have to shamefully admit I quite like the guy that plays Henry, it's his eyes, they are quite amazing.
I've not long ago watched series 1 and 2 after reading Philippa Gregory The Other Boleyn Girl and The Boleyn Inheritence. I've been to the library to look for something that might be a bit more accurate to tru life but most of the books are always on let. Any recommendations for what's best to read?

stonemonkey79 · 16/03/2009 02:52

somemightsay - have u seen the movie 'The Other Boleyn Girl'? ive seen it, not read the book but i heard its quite different. I think the 2 different portrayals of Anne in both 'The Tudors' and 'The Other Boleyn Girl' are quite interesting

have a look at Wikipedia to see what they reference under the TUdor Dynasty ... that might help ...

SomeMightSay · 16/03/2009 08:19

stonemonkey Yeah, I've seen the film, it's different in the same way that all films adapted for books are different iyswim, they've had to shrink down a whole book to fit into a 2 hour film so lots left out and bits changed to shorten story, but tbh, I read the book, watched the film then started watching the Tudors series so it's all merged into one

bump

Tambajam · 27/05/2009 23:19

Calm.
It's not due here until the Summer (the answer was that vague when someone wrote in a letter to the Radio Times). Previous pattern is early Summer/late Spring in the States and August/September in the UK.
Which sucks. So it started in the US in April. You haven't missed anything.

JacquelineBouvier · 28/05/2009 19:14

phew, thankyou! am calm now
