5 year old ds grown out of cbeebies - help!!

He suddenly doesn't want to watch it at all and wants to watch cbbc or for me to find a 'fighting channel, with fighting Mummy'. Sigh. Can anyone with older children tell me if there's anything decent on cbbc? It seems to me there's a bit of a gap for children between 5-7, too old for some cbeebies progs and too young for eg Tracey Beaker. And my heart sinks at really tacky cartoons. DD is 2 and cbeebies is great - I can leave them watching it for half an hour and know nothing will come on that will scare her or be inappropriate. ANy suggestions?

my 5yo likes blue peter ( i thought this was too old but he likes it) he loves all the info programmes on discovery kids like mystery hunters and croc files, and also the tiny pop channel with pop video, and corderoy. scooby doo scares him though, and some of older sons progs like digimon, power rangers make him agressive, so i keep him off those!

Do you have Sky or Cable? My 6 year old ds will watch some stuff on Nick Jr (e.g. Dora the Explorer) and likes Boomerang (Scooby Doo, Tom & Jerry and lots of other old cartoons, nothing Power Rangery). That's all he's allowed to watch at the mo - agree with you re CBBC for 5-7 year olds.

not cbbc ... we're in same position that it's too old for them (mine are nearly-six and four). DVDs fill the gap - Blue Planet [apart from where the baby whale is eaten alive by orcas, major trauma], Clangers, anything Wallace & Gromit, Tom & Jerry and other compilations of ancient Hollywood cartoons. Usually from the library.

I let mine (4 and 2) watch videos that I'm familiar with: Mary Poppins, Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory, Winnie the Pooh, Robin Hood (the classic cartoon one), Wallace and Gromit (but not A Close Shave) and Dumbo are all popular, as well as compilations like Thomas and Noddy.

But I agree re videos and DVDs, there's not a lot to fill the gap between CBeebies and mindless pop drivel, except Power Rangers which my DS (also 5) would love but NO WAY Jose! IME he watches DVDs time and time again, you can noramlly rent out older ones from Blockbuster for a week, 3 for £5, or hire them from the library. If he hires Antz or Bugs Life or the Incredibles or wtahever for a week, he watches them AT LEAST twice or 3 times.

ah - wallace and gromit! forgot that. He LOBVED chicken run when we got it out on vid. He would love to watch power rangers and all those fighty cartoons (has seen it round at a friends) but I agree it leads to fighty behaviour! He loves all the films mentioned - has just got incredibles - guess I may have to invest in some compilation dvds for those 20 minute tv sessions. Have onky got the cheap cable package so no Nick jn or boomerang

we love channel 5 Milkshake programmes.Especially Hi-5 and Aussie antics.

Exactly that, Binkie! Also the bit where it gets stuck in the shav-o-matic and breaks out. I know what my ds is like, and I don't need to add problems. There are even bits on the Thomas video that scare him! Plus dd already has bad dreams and cries out a lot at night, so no way am I going to let them watch anything the least bit scarey or aggressive. I may be old-fashioned, but I'd choose Noddy over Power Rangers any day!

I sympathise - I have a 5yo who watches angelmouse from behind the sofa. More seriously, we had a dreadful couple of months of nightmares after Monsters Inc, when he was 4, so I've been quite careful - and I suppose for him the overall cosiness of W&G means he can take Spike in his stride, just. Thinking about it, I believe it's suspense that scares him worst - gets very upset when he thinks someone is about to be found out having done something wrong, that kind of thing.

My five year old hates cbeebies, she is thrilled that Scooby Doo is on in the mornings (although it is Scrappy - yeearghh). She likes Blue Peter and Art attack/Smart too.

She'd love to watch pokemon and yugioh too if she was allowed, but mainly watches vids.

Hehe Cod, so glad there's another Sponge Bob fan here! dh thinks its hilarious and has bought ds a dvd which had been on loads this week. It's slowly driving me round the bend but nevertheless funny .
