who will it be?
DT will be a hard act to follow.

He is not young enough to be my son. He is young enough to be the brother that was born when I was eight.

KayHarkerClingsToTensLeg · 03/01/2009 23:00

serenity, oh indeedy. The weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth when McGann was confirmed as canon in Human Nature, oh it, was fun.

Although I did think it was odd how people who didn't accept McGann still called Eccleston 'Nine'. There's that fluidity

I love my Who. Haven't thawed completely but I am having lovely warm feelings about it again, five hours later...

serenity · 03/01/2009 23:00

8 years difference is fine. I only draw the line at double figures. 26 isn't young young. I had DS1 at that age and felt pretty mature at the time. Feel downright decrepid now, mind you.

ZebsRoomofHerOwn · 03/01/2009 23:01

Oh God Bigmouth, you're fine. I'm older than DT as well!!! Although only by a teency tiny ickle margin .

Hmm. Watched Demons. More kids playing grown ups and badly needing haircuts. . OMG I think I'm turning into my mother. I'm obsessing about boys having too long hair. Gah! I'm off to bed with my hot water bottle to cry into my cocoa...

KayHarkerClingsToTensLeg · 03/01/2009 23:04

Yeah, but it's not actually how young he is, it's how young he looks. Some folk are born looking at least 40, eg. John Thaw.

Matt Smith is like, oh, I dunno, Michael J Fox is the first perpetual-teen that springs to mind. Matt Smith. I'm writing it down and it just looks so, so... ordinary. Chiwetel Ejiofor, now that's a name

serenity · 03/01/2009 23:15

Stick an X in it, like Perdita does.

Matt X Smith. See? Sorted.

Chiwetal would have been good, but I do prefer him playing bad.

Or wearing thigh high boots.

Hmmm, d'ya think Moffat would have?.......naw, can't run in thigh high stilletoe boots (unless that's a neat Time Lord trick we haven't seen yet)

KayHarkerClingsToTensLeg · 03/01/2009 23:34

Now why can't the Doctor be bad? I think he's one of the most ambivalent moral characters out there. Chewy as the Oncoming Storm. It's still working for me. Matt is still just the Oncoming Light Breeze.

I'm working really hard on this tonight, I want to go to bed feeling a bit more closure! {grin]

NoBiggyTurkeyHereThanks · 03/01/2009 23:36

As long as his costume doesn't involve those trousers with the waistband under the buttocks so beloved of the young, I'll watch with an open mind. (Ish, I'll still be thinking Easter Island).

Kayteee · 04/01/2009 03:21

Should've been Richard Hammond

Flightattendant7 · 04/01/2009 07:11

I do apologise for my comment last night, it was well out of order.

Without wishing to disturb HQ enough to get it removed, may I retract it and replace the word 'cokehead' with 'immature'.

I think that is what he lacks, maturity.
Which sadly, I have too much of.

Who said Richard Hammond? naww.

Fillyjonk · 04/01/2009 08:45

gawd no to richard hammond

I'll tell you who would have been GREAT . the actor who played dr moon in silence in the library.

or actually alez kingston. that would have been an interesting take on the whole wife plot.

Aitch · 04/01/2009 09:29

MS was the best thing in party animals (okay, not that hard). he's very warmable-to, imo, and you'll all be wanting to mother him in the baddest way by the end of 2010, you mark my words. [catherine tate icon]

JackieNo · 04/01/2009 09:29

Well I'm not 100% sure, but I'm going to reserve judgement till it starts (in more than a year ). But please let him have a haircut before then.

I did wonder whether it was a deliberate ploy - we've got the kids and the mums and dads, now let's cast someone younger looking, to draw in the teenage girls, for whom DT may have been too old? He's a bit Edward Cullen-ish (nb: I know zilch about Twilight except what I've gleaned from threads on here).

bronze · 04/01/2009 09:51

I can forgive Doctor who anything after the dream I had last night (DT). thank goodness for pregnancy hormones.

Decided I will just watch and judge then.

PuppyMonkey · 04/01/2009 09:56

He's getting younger every time he regenerates isn't he? The doctor after next will probably be a small baby.

beansprout · 04/01/2009 10:09

I think he'll be brilliant and with SM in charge too, I think it has the potential for greatness. He was the best thing in Party Animals and I think a lot of people are put out that a) he is young and reminds a lot of us that we are getting old and that b) they simply hadn't heard of him before yesterday.

Aitch · 04/01/2009 10:12

his hair is v nobbish right now, though. it's not normally so modern romance...

JackieNo · 04/01/2009 10:27

I was reassured when I realised that he'd been in Party Animals - I really liked that. Made me feel a whole lot better about the whole thing.

UnquietDad · 04/01/2009 10:30

I am trying to remember how the world looked when I was 26...

The next milestone will be someone born after the first run of the show ended in 1989. If they announce the 12th Doctor in 2015 or thereabouts, it's entirely possible...

UnquietDad · 04/01/2009 10:32

And for what it's worth I think coming to the programme with no baggage and hence no over-familiarity with the show and what it "should be like" is a Good Thing.

edam · 04/01/2009 10:33

But I don't want to feel like I have to mother the doctor!

Puppy, I'm thinking of putting ds (age 5) up for the part when Matt Smith finishes. Or my mate's son (11) who is currently appearing in Oliver.

Aitch · 04/01/2009 10:38

but you'll be able to fuck tuck him up in bed at night... [leer]

pointydog · 04/01/2009 10:44

I watched a little clip of him. He seems all right. I am looking forward to him.

KayHarkerIsGlum · 04/01/2009 11:02

Nope, not looking any better this morning. And seriously, can we please sod off with the 'you're just sad because he makes you feel old' schtick. I'm quite young-looking myself, and I'm not the least bit bothered about my age.

I'm not sad because he makes me feel old, because he doesn't. I'm sad because he doesn't make me feel confident. I'm sure his mum is very nice, and I'm sure he's perfectly personable and talented. And I'm sure I'll just have to trust that whatever it is about him that completely wowed Moffat will wow me too (and I'm fairly sure it's not 'wow, I'd like to give you a good going-over' from me or Moffat).

It's just he seems so inarticulate in the interview. Everyone keeps saying when they rewatched it, they started to feel better, but he's still saying 'sixth-former' to me. Maybe I've just been spoiled by how well Tennant interviews.

I'm just being childish, though, and I don't want to have to 'wait and see', I want to be enthusiastic now.

JackieNo · 04/01/2009 11:04

But Kay - he has barely started - he doesn't have much to talk about yet. Maybe that's why he's sounding inarticulate?
