??

I don't have a clue what's going on, probably because I'm on MN at the same time. Everyone has Swedish names but are speaking English .

It's a dramatisation of a translation of a Swedish novel. I am recording it.

I have a Swedish surname but speak English

PortAndLemon · 30/11/2008 21:49

Midly hacked off that they have changed pronunciations (e.g. WOLLander instead of vallANDer). Assumption that viewing public are particularly stupid, I think.

PortAndLemon · 30/11/2008 21:50

(apologies if I've got the actual Swedish pronunciation wrong)

motherinferior · 30/11/2008 21:51

I have an umlaut. I am very, very proud of my umlaut.

liath · 30/11/2008 21:51

I think I must be the stupid viewing public .

I have been waiting for this since they first announced it months ago. I adore the books.

And I've only gone and bloody missed it.

I hope it's on iplayer.

UnquietDad · 30/11/2008 21:55

I think the Radio Times laboured the whole "Inspector Norse" thing. I expect it won't be long before we get references to a "smorgasbord of murder" and so on.

KatyMac · 30/11/2008 21:56

I couldn't really connect with it

I was hoping for great things,,,but it felt a little disjointed & I didn't warm to him at all

PortAndLemon · 30/11/2008 21:58

liath, you have never struck me as stupid, but if your brain would spontaneously explode at the idea of a character who spells his name Wallender saying "Hello, I'm vallANDer" then perhaps I've been mistaken...

PortAndLemon · 30/11/2008 22:00

UD, then they will have to work in Ulrika Jonsson or Sven Göran Eriksson, those being the only other popular media referents for Swedish culture...

KatyMac · 30/11/2008 22:03

But not Astrid Lungrun(sp sorry)...as no-one knows who she is

UnquietDad · 30/11/2008 22:04

It's the same approach they took with Van der Valk, isn't it? And that other one with Clive Owen (was it Clive Owen?) where he was meant to be Flemish and they all called each other Minheer. Now what the hell was that called??

KatyMac · 30/11/2008 22:04

& in case I got the name COMPLETELY wrong I mean the pippi longstocking lady

roisin · 30/11/2008 22:11

I got bored with it.
At 9.58 said to dh "oh, no, is this not about to finish? Have I got to stay and watch some more?"

I will pop back and see the last 15 mins and see if it's improved any.

UnquietDad · 30/11/2008 22:15

I'm not going to rest until I remember what that Flemish or Dutch one was called. It was on about 20 years ago, all on videotape, possibly ITV. I think it was Clive Owen, but I cant find anything in his IMDB entry that might be it.

KatyMac · 30/11/2008 22:24

If it's 20 yrs ago would it have Clive Owen in it? He seems a bit young

UnquietDad · 30/11/2008 22:25

You could be right KatyMac. Someone similar then.

KatyMac · 30/11/2008 22:27

Do you have a plot?

SpirobranchusGiganteus · 30/11/2008 22:28

Motherinferior, are you Sven Göran Eriksson?

UnquietDad · 01/12/2008 00:01

I can't remember anything about the plot.

TheArmadillo · 01/12/2008 12:58

I loved it - I think they translated the books reasonably well. The only prob I had was they didn't really bring the other police officers into it. I think for some of them their names weren't even mentioned and I only worked out who they were cos of the books.

It was slow paced but so are hte books. I think the british stuff (e.g. Rankin) tends to be much faster paced, but the Wallander books are spread out over a bigger period of time - in the books it tends to take months.

Also it was different for me cos I knew the story already.

I wish that kid (the skins one - can't remember his name) wasn't in it though. It's not that he's a bad actor (he's quite good) but he is in everything and I don't think he fitted the role particularly well.

tissy · 01/12/2008 13:01

It's a shame that they started with this story, it's the Mankell book that I enjoyed the least.

I hope the next few are as good as the books were.

TheArmadillo · 01/12/2008 13:10

hte next one is firewall.

I notice they are not doing the white lioness or the dogs or riga. Maybe their budget didn't stretch quite that far
