Dragon's Den - Evan Davies, great on radio, but why is he on the telly?

Honestly, hugely clever of course, and I like him on Newsnight or telly when they film him from the side but really - face on on Dragon's den, I can't help but think, no woman living who looked that quirky would ever ever EVER get a presenting job on telly.
Same goes for the ubiquitous Andrew Marr, nice guy but not the greatest look for telly! I don't think we should be looksist but I think people can be telegenic without being perfect!!!!!

I'd rather we went down the route of accepting the Evan Davis/Andrew Marr types on TV, and fighting for the rights of their female equivalents - Elinor Goodman springs to mind - than say that only eye-candy type men should be on TV as well.

What puts me off Evan Davies (& I think he's very good at his job) is that he has lots of tatoos & piercings & I just keep picturing those!

Oh yes, apparently he went very coy to a question about his albert ring. I have not been able to think of him in the same way since. Not without wincing

Habbibu, I'm not advocating any crusade against troll like men on telly at all, fair enough they get booked. But no campaign in my lifetime is ever going to work with those mostly male executives in telly... nothing would change them imo and ime!!

middle east/far east correspondents im not sure which

they arent that unusual looking tho

No, I think we're in agreement, ipanema, and I do agree it's sexist, but I guess we do have to keep trying, despite all the difficulties. I do love Elinor Goodman, though, but she is unfortunately an exception that seems to prove the rule.

Incidentally, I agree with the OP as to the fact that there is very much a different attractiveness standard for male & female presenters. Adrian Chiles (FAB though he is!) would never have got on telly were he a woman.

God yes he is like Nookie Bear...Robert Peston isnt ugly but irritating...Andrew Marr is ugly but less irrititating and Hugh Edwards is looking old, paunchy puffy and frankly couldn't appear less interested in the news he presents if he tried. He looked totally farked off to be in China at the Beijing Olympics - it was comical...Just to be fair though - ugly women in telly - Sian Lloyd (irritating weather girl-why?), Deborah Meaden (sooooo irritating - particularly as she comes over all school marmsish when she votes herself out in DD, silly bint),and can't think of any others, can you?

i do agree with your general point though...
actually there was an article in the grauniad yesterday about sexism when it comes to TV newsreaders-how female ones reach their sell-by dates much sooner than male ones etc.
selina scott is taking channel 5 to court for age discrimination here
she's hardly a troll though, far from it

Cat, I read that article, partly why I'm in a grump with the scary visaged male presenter at the moment!!! I mean look at Emily Maitless, she has to be as clever as those trolls and look totally fab as well!

Yep, new series of H&P 9pm BBC1 tonight (then straight onto C4 for new series of Ugly Betty, my DS is sooo excited!)
