New Brat Camp Tonight

I know this is the sort of TV I hate myself for watching, but I know I will be there at 9 tonight on C4.

One of the brats is a girl who announced to her mother's coffee circle that she had just had sex in a telephone box! OMG!!!!

Wanting your child to be happy is definitely not a bad thing. Wanting your child to be happy all the time? I want my child to be happy all the time too but let's get real.

Are you happy all the time? Will life after you make them happy all the time? They need to learn to deal appropriately with not getting what they want from a very early age - like the terrible twos.

Saying no , thereby creating unhappiness in them in the short term, can create more enduring happiness in the long term.

happymerryberries · 03/02/2005 07:26

I don't thing that wanting your children to be happy all the time is a bad thing. However being afarid to dicipline your child because it will make them unhappy in the short term is a problem.

I also think that it is unhealthy if parents satify a child's every whim; it leads to children who are incapable of coping with disapointment or the comnept of delayed gratification. I don't think that you have to go out of your way to 'disapint' them, in a normal family that will happen at times quite naturaly.

One child in this present group had been caught shoplifting 3 times. the alast time she said she saw a jacket and had to have it, so she stole it. This group of children cannot distingish needs from wants and that is not healthy,

Fennel I agree there was the main boss at Turnabout ranch who said, I am not a psycologist (SP?) I'm just a cowboy, but they do emplay those kind of people. We all saw Jenny having a councelling session, where she spent time going from being sweet and innocence to being a real madam.

I can see your point about these places seeming to be terrible, but I also think that when it gets to that point (and yes some responsibility should be placed on the parent) then 'tough love' is a really valid concept.

Anyone fancy starting a brat camp on Bodmin moor???

Beatie · 03/02/2005 11:20

I think it is maybe unfair to judge the Turnabouut Ranch on the basis of this one programme. So far all we have seen is the kids going through the Imnpact stage which is supposed to last 3 days. I didn't think they were treated badly. They were treated like I treat my toddler. Time out to think about what they've done and stand in the corner for bad behaviour (the swearing)

I'll be interested to see how the programme progressess once the kids start working with the animals and getting stuck in. I have a feeling it will turn out to be a more interesting and valid experience than the Redcliff camp.

Beatie · 03/02/2005 11:21

Oh yes, I forgot to add - I did see the programme about the schools in the carribean which are run more like prisons. I think they are a world away in their philosophy from this type of wilderness therapy.

the 'main boss' Wayne, I think you are referring to, did say, I am just a cowboy, etc. The commentator did also say the first time we saw him, that he was a retired police officer. This 'I am just a cowboy' sort of thing is what people say.

Joolstoo · 08/02/2005 19:20

Joolstoo · 08/02/2005 20:08

I've graduated from my circle [smug] emoticon

happymerryberries · 08/02/2005 20:10

I am reminded of the hippy types in the last one that made the kids carry a rock if they swore. Some very witty MN said that she would end up looking like the pile of rocks from the end of Schindlers list. So would I, come to think about it!
