Maja also seems to have the bulk of the crowd support- wonder if Iga's supporters have stuck around to cheer her on?

IceandIndigo · 18/10/2026 14:10

Tough for Sonay after such a good start.

JaneJeffer · 18/10/2026 14:24

Well done Maja

Well done Maja.

Raahh · 18/10/2026 14:25

Well done Maja.
Real shame for Sonay- but she has to be pleased with how far she has come since her injury lay off.

Raahh · 18/10/2026 14:39

The floral garland is ...interesting.

What??!!!Shock

Fizzywinegum · 19/10/2026 09:24

Oh blimey! I’m guessing that’s why his retirement was so sudden - that’s sad - they seemed well matched but I suppose no one really knows how things are Sad

JaneJeffer · 19/10/2026 09:27

I’ve just read her statement. It’s very sad. I think she’s in a dark place.

OP posts:
kazzaD66 · 19/10/2026 10:17

No, having read her statement, she doesn't seem happy atm. It would appear the split has not been Gael's decision.

On a happier note, I'm very pleased for Sonay. What a fantastic week, despite fading at the last hurdle, there are so many positives.

ChessieFL · 19/10/2026 10:28

Wow, that is a shock. They seemed happy at all the retirement celebrations earlier this year. Just shows you never really know what’s going on with people. I hope they both go on to be happy in whatever way works for them.

Shocked to hear Gael and Elina have split Sad

Wow!
Yes, that does kind of explain why Gael retired so quickly. How sad.

Raahh · 19/10/2026 10:43

kazza- yes, on a happier note- brilliant week for Sonay. She's now nearly back up to her best ranking, and playing really well.

StartupRepair · 19/10/2026 11:11

Such sad news for Gael and Elina.
Edited for typo

Pedant61 · 19/10/2026 15:42

I worry that Elina has tried to over-explain in her post, because she's getting hammered in the comments. Whilst her distress about the war is understandable, and unimaginable, the rest of it really doesn't make sense.

IceandIndigo · 19/10/2026 16:19

Yeah the post was a bit weird. I guess she felt the need to try to explain so that people don't speculate that there was another person involved.

JaneJeffer · 19/10/2026 16:49

Oh she should have turned her comments off. Last thing she needs is a load of nutters leaving their thoughts on her private business.

I'm watching Ningbo- Jasmine started well and took the first set, but is 0-5 down in the second. She could even be at risk of a bagel.

Sara Errani is watching- I wonder what was discussed behind the scenes after the disastrous doubles final? There have been no indications that Sara was injured.

Raahh · 20/10/2026 10:12

She's pulled back a couple of games, so that looks a lot more respectable. It's Kalinina making all the mistakes now.

Raahh · 20/10/2026 10:26

Serving for 6-5 now. What a strange set.

Raahh · 20/10/2026 10:34

Wow. Well done Jasmine. From 0-5 to win the set.

bluegreygreen · 20/10/2026 13:00

I see Elina Svitolina has put out another statement, which isn't much clearer than her first.

I think she would have been better not saying anything.

kazzaD66 · 20/10/2026 13:18

Yes, either she's not very good at explaining the situation (and why should she anyway, it's none of our business) or there's something more to it that she doesn't want to talk about. Either way, it's a sad situation but I do feel sorry for Gael, as it seems this is none of his doing and he has missed out on a much deserved goodbye in Lyon and Paris because of it.Sad
