ITV has announced the release date for its highly-anticipated drama The Party, a five-part series based on Elizabeth Day's 2017 novel of the same name that boasts a starry cast.

Adapted for the screen by Chivalry's Sarah Solemani (https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/a70049607/streaming-guide/?route=modal&sid=pr1jEd), the show follows decades-long friends Ben, who is working class, and Martin, who is wealthy.

The Party is a glossy, five-part adaptation of Elizabeth Day’s bestselling novel. Produced by World Productions—the powerhouse team behind Line of Duty and Vigil—the series dives into the dark, intoxicating world of political ambition, old money, class hierarchy, and long-buried secrets.

WHAT IS THE PARTY ABOUT?
The series spans three decades, focusing on the intense, complicated bond between Martin (Luke Evans) and Ben (Tom Cullen).

Raised by his working-class single mother, Sylvia (Joanna Scanlan), Martin secures a scholarship to an elite public boarding school where he meets Ben.

Welcomed into Ben’s aristocratic family—the Fitzmaurices—Martin finds the sense of belonging he has always craved.

In return, Martin develops a fierce, unwavering devotion to Ben through life’s greatest crises.

Thirty years later, Martin attends a lavish birthday party hosted at the Fitzmaurice country estate.

The event is thrown into spin when news breaks that the Conservative Prime Minister has resigned, prompting Ben to consider launching his own leadership bid.

Fearing the intense spotlight of a high-profile political campaign, Martin panics that secrets from their past will be exposed—setting off a chain reaction with tragic consequences.

The narrative moves between the shocking events at the country estate, the tense police investigation that follows, and flashbacks to Martin and Ben’s school, university, and wild London party years.

STAR-STUDDED CAST: WHERE HAVE YOU SEEN THEM BEFORE?
The Party features an ensemble cast nblending Hollywood heavyweights with UK TV royalty:

• Luke Evans as Martin Gilmour: The Welsh star leads the series as Martin. Evans is best known globally for his roles as Bard the Bowman in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy, Gaston in Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast, and Owen Shaw in the Fast & Furious franchise, alongside acclaimed TV roles in Nine Perfect Strangers, The Pembrokeshire Murders, and The Alienist.

• Tom Cullen as Ben Fitzmaurice: Playing the charismatic political candidate, Cullen famously starred as Viscount Gillingham in Downton Abbey and lead roles in The Gold, Knightfall, and the indie film Weekend.

• Joanna Scanlan as Sylvia Gilmour:Playing Martin’s mother, BAFTA-winner Scanlan is renowned for her performances in After Love, The Thick of It, No Offence, and Getting On.

• Sarah Solemani as Lucy Gilmour: The show’s creator and writer also stars as Martin’s pregnant wife. Viewers will recognize Solemani from Bridget Jones’s Baby, Him & Her, Bad Education, and Chivalry.

• Lydia Leonard as Serena Fitzmaurice:Playing Ben’s formidable wife, Leonard’s credits include Gentleman Jack, Wolf Hall, The Crown, and Ten Percent.

• Lindsay Duncan & Douglas Hodge as Lord George & Lady Katherine Fitzmaurice: Playing Ben’s aristocratic parents, Lindsay Duncan (The Morning Show, His Dark Materials, About Time) and Tony Award winner Douglas Hodge (The Night Manager, I Hate Suzie Too, Joker) bring serious weight to the matriarch and patriarch roles.

• Supporting Cast: The ensemble includes Sam Troughton (Chernobyl, Lockerbie), Sally Scott (Black Doves), Sinéad Matthews (Hullraisers), Bally Gill (Slow Horses), Amaka Okafor (Secret Service), and Rakie Ayola (The Pact).

WHERE WAS THE PARTY FILMED?
Principal photography took place across South Wales, doubling for elite boarding schools, grand English country estates, and urban London settings.

Martin invites Ben to his birthday party, where he outlines his intention to run for leader of the Conservative Party. Things soon get out of hand, there's a gunshot, and the police get involved. But what exactly went down?

The Party is going to kick off on Sunday, 11 October with the second and third episodes going out on Monday, 12 October and Tuesday, 13 October, respectively etc to Thur

I don’t know if Luke Evans as Martin has been cast right for this, he seems charisma-free and I’m finding I have to slightly strain to hear him.

You're right. I got the name wrong in my post, if it's Martin who is the journalist.

Their idea of fun is completely different to mine and I didn’t find any of it gripping. Indeed reading the review I was obviously not giving it my full attention because the characters are so horrible.

I enjoyed it but we know I like most stuff 😂

Going to a party with that lot would be hell!

Blondeshavemorefun · 12/10/2026 15:46

Tho the party itself would be hell

Thought it was going to be good bit it was just dull and tedious don't think I'll bother with the rest of it.

Hotafternoon · 12/10/2026 16:14

I didn't like it, I'm going to give Time a watch and hope that's a lot better.

Didn't like one character in The Party and that's the kiss of death for me. I won't bother carrying on with further episodes. Shame as I was looking forward to it being aired. 😒

I’m the complete opposite Grin

the80sweregreat · 12/10/2026 17:05

It gave me ‘ brideshead’ and ‘ Saltburn’ vibes during episode one.

boxofcrap · 12/10/2026 17:32

I have quite enjoyed this although I believe the ending differs from the book? The Saltburn writer was clearly influenced by this book

It was definitely too long though

the80sweregreat · 12/10/2026 17:43

Posh boy and the one from the ‘ hood ‘ ! How many times has this been done ? Even if Martin isn’t that bad , they still look down on him really ! The class system is so mad in the UK.

Brideshead it isn’t. Brideshead the series is sublime. This isn’t. I’ll watch tonight’s. But I’m not sure I care enough.

the80sweregreat · 12/10/2026 18:11

I just thought it had a few similarities to Brideshead , but I agree that is a superior book and adaptation back in the day!

NewAgeNewMe · 12/10/2026 18:17

I absolutely love Brideshead and whenever I watch it I can practically recite it, word for word. Maybe more Gosford Park with the attempted murder/murder, (not a spoiler I assume so from the blood), another that I love.

I agree about the whole class system…

the80sweregreat · 12/10/2026 18:23

I loved the book. Brideshead Revisited taught me a lot about the class system and its inner workings. I don’t feel that anything has really moved on. The establishment looks down on the little people , it’s ingrained and nothing much can change it even if people think they can. ( only my opinion though)

What is going on with this thread? Blondes keeps getting deleted and the thread itself is all muddled up. Confused

the80sweregreat · 12/10/2026 18:38

Jane , blonds is never hidden away !
Must be a mistake and definitely not a spoiler !
