Winter is coming soon to ITV, and the new crime drama combines two of our favourite things – Richard Armitage looking steely and mysterious, with a compelling police procedural.

Described as a “captivating” new series, it positions fan favourite Richard in the leading role as Dr Ethan Winter.

He’s an “unconventional forensic pathologist whose brilliance, sharp intellect and rule-breaking approach helps the police solve some of the most complex murder cases”.

Yes, readers, he’s a maverick.

Even better, he has a deeply-buried secret that none of his colleagues know about… What more could you want from a crime drama?!

ITV’s Winter introduces Dr Ethan Winter, one of the most gifted pathologists of his generation.

He possesses an “extraordinary analytical mind”, which is capable of “impeccable deductive reasoning”.

Ethan uses his brilliant mind to help police solve some of the Bristol’s most complex murder cases.

His methods “perfectly complement” those of DI Lauren Bell. She’s a meticulous, no-nonsense detective who is as driven as Winter when working on a case.

Together they make a formidable team, as “Winter’s genius and insight into the victims is invaluable to Bell and her murder squad detectives”.

Yet viewers eventually discover that Winter is harbouring a secret…

The ITV synopsis tells us: “The unsolved murder of someone close to him still haunts his every move.

And he’s intent on unofficially investigating the death to bring the murderer to justice.

This personal thread runs beneath the six-part series, with each episode featuring its own compelling, self-contained crime story.”

Richard Armitage (https://www.tvguide.co.uk/articles/missing-you-richard-armitage-harlan-coben-collaborations/) stars as gifted pathologist Dr Ethan Winter in the cast of Winter on ITV.

Of course, the actor is known for his role in multiple Harlan Coben thrillers, as well as playing Guy of Gisborne in Robin Hood, Daniel Miller in Berlin Storm, and Lucas North in Spooks.

Missing You star Richard Armitage: Why he keeps returning to Harlan Coben

The actor is about to play his fourth character straight out of a Harlan Coben suspense novel.

The constant reappearance of the dead lady is annoying me too and RA is coming across as smug , plus I lost interest and now don’t know what’s going on amymore !

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/10/2026 10:04

I’m entrigued by the triangle skin

Watched the first episode tonight. It’s a very poor English remake of Balthazar which was utterly phenomenal! Sexy French pathologist, dead wife, ghosts, etc. only Balthazar oozes real sex appeal and that glorious ability to be right up his own arse and loving it. I believe the actor did his own stunts as well.
Winter is just a pallid, poor imitation.

Blondeshavemorefun · 12/10/2026 07:48

I’ve never heard of that

Balthazar had 5 series. I doubt Winter will make it to a second series.

How long were the episodes of Balthazar? I've wondered if ITV have trimmed the stories because some things are strangely abrupt, eg in the first episode it was said the wife suffered domestic abuse with no evidence apart from "everyone knew" and that was treated with empathy as an understandable reason for the premeditated murder of her husband. And in the second episode after the woman stabs herself Winter just says "the paramedics say she'll be fine if they stitch her up in time" that's the end of that case and they go home.

moto748e · 12/10/2026 12:33

Not heard of Balthazar. Was it on Walter Presents. Netflix, etc in the UK?

LittlePinkWeed · 12/10/2026 12:38

Looks like Balthazar was available in the UK on Acorn TV.

iQofaCrayon · 12/10/2026 12:53

I watched it on ITV X. It’s in French but subtitled. Definitely worth a look and the acting is excellent from everyone involved.

moto748e · 12/10/2026 13:06

I like French series. I'm watching Coastal Unit now (OK, not brilliant) and seen a few lately. Will have a look.

ShanghaiDiva · 12/10/2026 13:10

Watched episode one last night and it’s so bad it’s hilarious. Dh took one look at the woman in red who appears in Winter’s flat and said - assume she’s dead.

Cherrypi · 12/10/2026 14:10

It's terrible but I can't stop watching. Bristol looks beautiful. The police lady has terrible medical knowledge. Obviously never watched ER or Greys anatomy. It is very over narrated for people on their phones.

moto748e · 12/10/2026 14:20

Bristol isn't that beautiful! 😀Like most places, it has a few nice bits, though.

Blondeshavemorefun · 12/10/2026 14:23

Why/how do so many of you work out she’s dead /a ghost

OP posts:
Tallisker · 12/10/2026 15:02

Do you have to go over the Clifton bridge every time you need to go somewhere in Bristol?

Only if you’re filming a television programme Grin

Why/how do so many of you work out she’s dead /a ghost

Probably because we've watched a lot of television and have seen the scenario before! I think the fact that he'd already had a partial flashback to something bad having happened in his flat that when she appeared many of us thought "ah finding her dead in his flat must have been the traumatic event and he's imagining her still alive". The storytelling is very heavy-handed.

LittlePinkWeed · 12/10/2026 15:29

Thanks @iQofaCrayon - Wikipedia not very reliable in this instance.

Why/how do so many of you work out she’s dead /a ghost

Because it is so formulaic:
very odd professional - speaks to dead bodies
dedicated to work - turns up at detective’s house at 4am in the morning
unable to form a meaningful relationship in the present due to extreme focus and dedication- 4am scene
brilliant mind- detailed knowledge of all things forensic and caves!
extreme risk taker - climbing scene at the start of episode one
something mysterious in his past- firework scene flashback
so woman is bound to be dead as this links all of the above together to create another derivative tv series.

I'm sure you won't be surprised to hear that the answer to that is, absolutely not!

I don't get any of that and come up with the conclusion that she's dead.

How about you ? @Blondeshavemorefun

I'm beginning to lose count of the number of offences Ethan has committed in the course of pursuing the dead wife's killing. And I have to admit I also don't really care who did kill her. I wonder if she'll bugger off when he eventually nails the real killer?
