Winter is coming soon to ITV, and the new crime drama combines two of our favourite things – Richard Armitage looking steely and mysterious, with a compelling police procedural.

Described as a “captivating” new series, it positions fan favourite Richard in the leading role as Dr Ethan Winter.

He’s an “unconventional forensic pathologist whose brilliance, sharp intellect and rule-breaking approach helps the police solve some of the most complex murder cases”.

Yes, readers, he’s a maverick.

Even better, he has a deeply-buried secret that none of his colleagues know about… What more could you want from a crime drama?!

ITV’s Winter introduces Dr Ethan Winter, one of the most gifted pathologists of his generation.

He possesses an “extraordinary analytical mind”, which is capable of “impeccable deductive reasoning”.

Ethan uses his brilliant mind to help police solve some of the Bristol’s most complex murder cases.

His methods “perfectly complement” those of DI Lauren Bell. She’s a meticulous, no-nonsense detective who is as driven as Winter when working on a case.

Together they make a formidable team, as “Winter’s genius and insight into the victims is invaluable to Bell and her murder squad detectives”.

Yet viewers eventually discover that Winter is harbouring a secret…

The ITV synopsis tells us: “The unsolved murder of someone close to him still haunts his every move.

And he’s intent on unofficially investigating the death to bring the murderer to justice.

This personal thread runs beneath the six-part series, with each episode featuring its own compelling, self-contained crime story.”

Richard Armitage (https://www.tvguide.co.uk/articles/missing-you-richard-armitage-harlan-coben-collaborations/) stars as gifted pathologist Dr Ethan Winter in the cast of Winter on ITV.

Of course, the actor is known for his role in multiple Harlan Coben thrillers, as well as playing Guy of Gisborne in Robin Hood, Daniel Miller in Berlin Storm, and Lucas North in Spooks.

Missing You star Richard Armitage: Why he keeps returning to Harlan Coben

The actor is about to play his fourth character straight out of a Harlan Coben suspense novel.

I watched the first 10 minutes and wondered if Simone was dead
There was just something about how they did it

But it's not one I'll be continuing
I don't really want to watch what they do with the bodies

purpleme12 · 01/10/2026 14:38

Well this did make me chuckle

I didn't get round to this last night. Is it any good?

No, not really. But it has Richard Armitage in it 💟

moto748e · 01/10/2026 18:04

I just saw a review in the Indy. it was considerably less complimentary than the Graun. I may give this one a miss.

The plot was a bit daft in parts but I enjoyed it too.

Funnily enough I also thought the girlfriend was imagination early on too. I think it's when he woke alone and didn't seem surprised or look for her.

ACupOfVintage · 01/10/2026 20:16

I’ve binge watched most of the episodes and it was hard going. One of those series that draws you in in the hope it will get better but it never does. It’s a 4/10 from me.

PrincessScarlett · 01/10/2026 21:35

Excellent review from The Guardian. Richard Armitage in a cagoule! What more could you possibly want? 🤣🤣

PerdreLeBleu · 02/10/2026 13:41

It was beyond ridiculous. I’m surprised RA got involved in this. All that stomping around doing what he wants. Most pathologists rarely leave tge mortuary unless specifically asked to attend a scene. Also the dismal mortuary as if set in the Victorian era. This is Bristol so would have assumed an up to date mortuary with a viewing window so you don’t have unnecessary people stood around the body (or police officers fainting due to the smell!). It also looked like he had one case and that was it? All that talking to the body crap. It was all so unrealistic, which is why I stopped with Silent Witness after Amanda Burton left.

I think SW was based on the Kay Scarpetta books by Patricia Cornwall which I can live with as I think pathologists in the USA have a wider role than here. I will however continue watching. I do like a good moan 😂.

Freysimo · 03/10/2026 08:29

Watched first episode. Dreadful, like it was written by AI. Its the sort of drama US TV would do brilliantly but here writers have resorted to same old boring clichés and unbelievable plots.

Rosecoffeecup · 04/10/2026 13:37

Howling at the Guardian review. FAECES.

I will continue watching, love RA and Annabel Scholey even if this is nonsense

RaraRachael · 04/10/2026 14:01

OH really liked it. I thought it was ok. I didn't see the dead fiancee bit coming but I don't always get the obvious.
Were we meant to believe that the mother carted all that stuff into the caves by herself?
I'd never heard of Richard Armitage so can't compare it to anything else.
I hope there won't be plot holes and loose ends not tied up as I find tht very annoying.

the80sweregreat · 04/10/2026 14:02

I did think from the off that his partner had died and he was imaging her.

the80sweregreat · 04/10/2026 14:04

Only watched one so far , but I bet the policewoman’s husband is having an affair. So she will with RA’s character, but only a guess.

Empress13 · 04/10/2026 20:07

Can’t get past the fact Lauren is the image of Kate Middleton!

the80sweregreat · 04/10/2026 20:13

I thought that the policewoman looks like the Duchess of wales too!

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/10/2026 20:42

Seems many of us didn’t get the dead fiance

Delighted to hear this is in the fine tradition of Witless Silence, i.e. bonkers. I shall have to watch.

Finally got around to watching today, and I was not disappointed. Unfeasibly luxurious penthouse for someone on a forensic pathologist's salary? Tick. Totally unnecessary jumping into a pothole rather than waiting for the SOCO and cops? Tick. Protagonists want to stop someone fleeing the area, so they all hare off in their cars with sirens blaring rather than calling the local cops to do the business? Tick.

Nikki and Jack would be proud of them.

LittlePinkWeed · 05/10/2026 18:39

"I'd never heard of Richard Armitage"
😧😧😧
You need to watch BBC's North and South.
