Pompeii with Tom Hiddleston - What did I just watch??

Anyone seen this on National Geographic?

I was looking forward to it but what a lot of over produced, corny and pretentious nonsense. It was almost comical at times, the ridiculous hand gestures he did to freeze the scene, swiping around with his hand, and pretending he was speaking Latin just off the cuff.

Please tell me I'm not the only one. 😂

The review in the Guardian basically said the same. Corny and cringe. 😬

Haha I’m a sucker for anything pompeii based so was excited to binge watch this on Thursday. It made my toes curl and not in a good way: he was genuinely speaking Latin - and he’s a major classics geek based on what I have read about him. It was the dramatic bits where he appeared to be verbalising his thoughts that just went a step too far. It seemed quite American (I’ve seen other things done in a similar style). I actually liked the fact that he found two locals and focussed on what their lives were like at that time. But the bits where I’d usually be fixated on TH were just a bit cringey: I think it’s a bit of a marmite programme.

He did study ancient Greek and Latin, so that bit is unreasonable, but these entertainment documentaries are useful for people who might be interested without being the usual target audience for a Mary Beard or suchlike.

Did it involve Frankie Howerd at any point

Tom Hiddleston is an absolute cringefest tbf! i think he was asked to help write it, i saw an interview his Degree is in the classics, i am going to watch it though because I am fascinated by Pompei and I love TH and his Cringey ways.

Yes sorry should have been clear - I know he can read Latin. It was the bit at the start where he's sitting with the classisicst staring at presumably an empty but if space in the air before they put the CGI plaque in there in post production, and he makes out like he's only Just seeing this wonderful plaque and the name of the boy the whole premise of the episode is on.

I think they’re tying it in sometimes with Loki, as it’s rather unavoidable to do so. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I like him

There's an episode in the series where he goes to Pompeii, sets some goats free and tells the locals they're about to die - it's probably exactly why the programme was made with him in the first place, as it would pull in people that wouldn't ordinarily watch anything history related.
