Anyone watching Shipwrecked: nightmare at sea on Netflix?

it’s about the Costa Concordia, and wow it’s shocking how incompetent the captain was

No but will have a look. My husband has his captains ticket and it’s comical how many captains he sails with don’t have half his knowledge or experience. The stories he could tell would turn your hair grey!

Sherararara · 10/07/2026 20:42

No I’m not watching it. HTH.

Not sure I should given I'm on a cruise in a few months and what @MakeMineAMilkyTea has just said 😂

I watched it yesterday. The captain was really incompetent! I couldn't believe that he left the ship either. The whole ship should have been evacuated much sooner than it was.

It must have been so hard for the family with the baby Lila [ I'm sure there were other families on there, but they focused on this one ] It must have been terrifying for them having to slide down the ship with the baby not knowing what was going to happen.

It was also a miracle that one of the ships staff was found [ can't remember his name - he had broken his leg ]

If it helps my husband is on lpg tankers rather than cruise ships.

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 19/07/2026 07:46

Yes ! And this furthers the fact of why I won't go on cruises
Absolutely horrifying and should have abandoned the ship way before they did .
Im glad the captain was imprisoned , it was his ego that caused that

Lulu1919 · 19/07/2026 08:06

I watched it last week

I think that makes it worse, if he is more competent than most then I would like him to be captain on a cruise.

tonystarksrighthand · 19/07/2026 10:17

Yes. It’s common knowledge a captain stays on board. If you listen to the original tapes. (YouTube I think) he is ordered to go back to the ship. He was a coward!!!

jessieplat · 19/07/2026 10:27

It was an interesting programme, I didnt realise how traumatic the experience was, by the time I’d heard about it in 2012 most were off and safe and I didn’t think much about it.

The captain was incompetent for sure and his behaviour afterwards years later awful, but I do feel the cruise company lined up to put all the blame on him when there was no doubt other failings systemically, not just with the captain.

This was so hard to watch. The actual footage of the scrum to get off with everyone panicking. Awful.
