I did think it was a little mean of her to go through with the mariage. If it was me I'd have leapt out of that hammock pretty sharpish. She had been told thats what the ceremony was, so she must have known what was going on.

CatIsSleepy · 25/06/2008 22:11

lazarou there was a programme called Tribe- guy called Bruce Parry stayed with lots of different tribes for a month at a time
it was a great show actually-he really got to live as part of the tribe, went out hunting with them etc there was none of this finding yourself bollocks
he just got stuck in and got on with it-it was fascinating

he was a real sweetie too-the nicest bit was seeing him having a laugh with these people somehow even without a common language etc
I heart Bruce Parry

pinkmook · 25/06/2008 22:12

Hi

I thought I should clear up that I didnt know about getting married until the day of the wedding as it happened!! ( lahtough looking back on my journal I should have seen it coming!) We left the next day so all was very rushed
I learned a lot and hope that I did not hurt him. The truth is I was in love with someone else at home !

Are you the real Bopo or another MNer messing about?

bopo · 26/06/2008 22:53

I am pretty real.. although the world looks very different today !

The whole thing became so complicated so quickly. ( as is always the case with men !) I now feel I have a responsibility to support the community in Bameno and I am looking for people to help me .

They need to be able to patrol their territory and they need medicine. I want to give things not money.

To the Huoarani ( note different spelling to the BBC) a marriage is a partnership.

So Any ideas of what I am supposed to do next welcome !!

regards

Bopo

bopo · 26/06/2008 22:56

Oh and you must watch Lana of the Afar next week.. same time .... as you saw I had a blast but she had a really rough time. She is an amazing woman. She watched my program with me for the first time !

YouNeverKnowIMightFlounce · 26/06/2008 22:59

damn it i missed it.....

well hello there bopo!

pamplemousse · 26/06/2008 23:09

Wow
Just watched this week's episode. I do hope you are the real Bopo or I will feel silly for believing you
What an amazing oppurtunity, I do hope that you are able to help these people in the way you want to. I have no practical ideas I'm afraid but do keep us updated on what you come up with.
Do you think you will go back there? I mean for a visit, or even for longer?
I admit I felt awkward with the speed of the marriage and the fact they hadn't told you about it. With the language barrier the wealth of feelings that needed to be got across must have been hard.
Well done though a challenge I'm sure but you got a very good looking husband out of it all who obviously cares for you
One last thing, where is that river that you rode down with your daughters??!!! I dream of hacking like that!

bopo · 26/06/2008 23:10

Waponi !

Its on again later in the week late at night... monday I think?

In fairness to the bbc having repeats so quickly the programs were really expensive to make.

Althought hey did not have to spend a lot on my food and loggings...

Am tired but cant sleep...

Bopo

hamandhigh · 26/06/2008 23:10

Hi Bopo, I love this programme and thought you were very brave.
I think you were right in saying we have lost so much in the way we live now.
When I watched how hard those people worked and how fulfilled and happy they were it reminded me of how we should be living and what we can learn from them.
I think what sticks in my head the most is the tribal leader declaring that he never wanted his children to pay for food. Brilliant in its simplicity really.
So whatcha gonna do to help? I am sure that there are many of us on here who would help.

Forgot to say it had me in floods at the end!!

bopo · 26/06/2008 23:16

Waponi! Pamplemousee

I have no idea if I will go back there.. everyone is asking me that. I just need to keep focused on my work.....thats not easy today..

I took a day of " rest " today...

There were also issues with Translations. From Huoa to Spanish and then from Spanish to English.

A lot of the time the tapes were not translated until later in the evening and I wasnt allowed in that area.

The Crew did an amazing tough job..there were only two of them !

Its a ford near us ... That was fab but cold.. saldy it has been recently gated it was great to wash the horses feet off !

Bopp

bopo · 26/06/2008 23:21

What can none of us sleep !!!

Frankly I use to laugh with Wani about the whole filming bit ! Not in a nastly way a fun way.

I am not sure that the TV crew were that aware very quickly either because of the translations. If anyone heard the radio 4 interview that I did on womans hour the Huoarani do not concentrate to well for long periods of time. There was more than 80 hours of filiming to traslate!

bopo · 26/06/2008 23:26

The good thing of course anout the marriage is that it has given the community a voice for the rainforest.

I dont think the elders of the tribe make these kind of decisions lightly ...off to bed now...

thanks for listening. I will let you know when I come up with how I can move this forward

BOPO

hamandhigh · 26/06/2008 23:28

G'night Bopo

pamplemousse · 26/06/2008 23:28

I felt for the crew (and you too!) when you went on the hunting trip, the camera guy was trying to run through the jungle after the men who were chasing the boar.
Will you start a website or something to promote the work you want to do for the tribe? Its so hard to get the initial idea to get the ball rolling. Do you want to raise money to get them something - what do they need though? Apart from the logging companies to stop. I wonder what other organisations are campaigning against it, I'm sure Bruce Parry (bow and worship the chirpy man!!) mentioned something about the logging on one of his episodes.Sorry I am rambling thinking aloud

colditz · 26/06/2008 23:33

I think this is ethically appalling.

How would you feel if the person you were engaged to, planned to spend the rest of your life with, decided to give your heart and soul to, turned around on your wedding day and say "Oh darling, it was all a fabulous wheeze, but you didn't think I'd really marry you did you? Ahhh hahahaha. No. I'm going home!"

And then fucked off and didn't come back.

Would you think it was 'an interesting experience' or 'a fascinating look at another culture' or would you be a bit gutted that you had been jilted at the alter?

Their marriages are no less legitimate to them than british marriages are to the British. They are human people with human feelings and I think to play with something as sacrosanct as marriage for the sake of television and entertainment is hideous. What is even more hideous is that there is a man out there waiting for his wife to come back.
