Just started watching this after having read the book while ago.

And omg! What a tense first episode.

I have watched all the English language adaptations after reading most of his books and this one is starting very well 👏

I feel a bit disappointed by this tv adaptation, the British ones have been better but this American production just feels like something that would be on channel 5 or Alibi or Sky Witness. The acting is wooden and the screenplay feels really rubbish. Which is a shame as I was looking forward to it.

I've given up on the TV adaptions. They seem to be written badly on purpose. I know that sounds like an odd statement, but that's the impression I get. The script writing is awful, the plots far fetched, and dialogue is really cheesy. Lots of good actors sign up for it though, but I suppose they are quite fun stories to act in. I've not read any of the books because the TV adaptions have put me off, but it seems they are much more popular and better than the TV adaptions.

@Florabella Apparently Amazon have the rights to the Myron Bolitar series of books so Netflix can’t make any of those. Infuriating as I’d love to see those adapted

I think Amazon did an excellent job of adapting Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch books. I was reluctant to watch it, because as much as I like Titus Welliver, I just couldn't see him as Bosch. However, I thought the whole thing was spot on, Welliver proved me wrong and most of the supporting cast was well cast, except the daughter was a bit bland - but that's just my opinion.

So I would very happily watch an Amazon produced Myron Bolitar series, especially with how I felt about Netflix's efforts with Coben. I must admit I did stop subscribing to Netflix several years ago for various reasons.

I finished the last episode and have a few questions:

  1. How could Cheryl have gone through with any artificial insemination if she was already pregnant? Surely they would make her do a test at the clinic on the day to be sure?!?
  1. What happened to that corrupt FBI woman who was also working for the Paynes?
  1. What happened to that other FBI man (Simmons or something) who was also working for the Paynes?

Can't believe how many people the Payne family money managed to buy and put in their pockets!

I was also shocked at the way Hayden battered that Swiss detective and shot his own mother in such cold blood, although she was a manipulative bitch who made him like he was 😳

That’s exactly how I feel - too many storylines that you now know are just put in to be ‘twists’ to make you keep guessing and you can almost guarantee that the culprit will not appear until later in the tale.it feels a bit too forced - like they’re following a format. Just not working for me unfortunately.

It was entertaining enough but how stupid are the FBI when they can’t tell that someone shot themselves? Thats the bit that annoyed me a lot for some reason.

Completely! If you’re pregnant, you would
cancel the appointment

and surely you have to supply identification before they treat you

totally huge gaping plot hole. She didnt attend the appointment, crazy arse Hayden wouldn’t have thought the baby was his and would never have kidnapped the kid

Yes, I meant to say about the ID as well. As if they would let her give her sister's name without checking any form of ID matched first 🤦‍♀️

She did attend the appointment and did get the sperm. But tested pregnant the next morning so baby was David’s.

I binged final 4 today and had read the book 2-3 years ago and was still surprised by the ending (it was excellent how many other things were going on with innocent explanations!)

overall loved it! I like all his stuff, least no James Nesbit for once (who I do love regardless!)

TheChosenTwo · 22/06/2026 22:13

The silliness just got beyond silly after about episode 3. I did finish it but lost interest and was only half watching by the end. I don’t know why but in my head if a murderer escapes jail more fuss would be made for public attention. He just seemed to be swanning about the streets.
And as for the FBI father/daughter pairing, just bizarre really.
My favourite HC adaptation is The Stranger.

But how could that happen? Surely a fertility clinic would do a pregnancy test on the actual day of insemination?

OP posts:
burnoutbabe · 23/06/2026 07:35

well of course!

but this was a fertility clinic run by AN EVIL
CORPORATION that let anyone just log in and browse patient records. Or photographers just send anyone who calls up pictures from one of their gigs. It’s not hyper real on small facts.

(possible that pregnant dat 1, went to clinic day 13 and tested negative then but positive next day , i don’t know what day a test would show a result? I assume not day of sex so must be a bit of delay.

Corryvreckan · 23/06/2026 07:42

I have stopped watching and Harlan Coben series.
Enjoyed the first one I watched.
Quite liked the second.
By the third I realised he is a one trick pony.

pouletvous · 23/06/2026 21:13

Ypu would test on the day of insemination

I did. On the day of starting IVF. Just in case i didn’t have to go through with it

Agree , we were shouting this at the TV.

dailychallenge · 23/06/2026 22:04

It was ok but as usual with these series, 8 episodes is far too long. 5 or 6 would have covered it.
