This is a completely different format, and production company. While I am appalled by the MAFS UK allegations, I am horrified by sexual abuse and violence against women in general, it is far too prevalent among the general population so it's not exactly a complete surprise that this would also happen among couples in this context. In the case of Shona and Bradley, his controlling nature was very evident on the show and the experts called that out and they were removed, rightly. The primary issue here appears to be that CPL and to an extent Channel 4 did not adequately deal with the complaints raised at the time. For example interpreting the acid throwing comment as a passing remark and not a threat - I mean who threatens an acid attack in passing?? I hope they are severely sanctioned, that the men are prosecuted, and that things change.
But do I think the format (of the UK version) is inherently responsible for what has happened? I'm not convinced. This happens whenever men and women are in proximity, and perhaps there should be more emphasis on the option to have separate sleeping arrangements. I have twice been sexually assaulted by a date and separately a partner, it was in pretty similar circumstances to those described by one of the women and I was really grateful for her point that this is how it happens, just casually, not an attack in the way people often imagine, but just ignoring the no and going ahead anyway (and men doing this who generally wouldn't and probably don't consider themselves rapists). But you certainly don't need to be on MAFS for that to happen, it happens to women in normal relationships every single day.
Edited for typo.
