NEW six parts detective series starts tonight 9 pm

Why is it that every time a former detective tries to retire to a quiet village, they’re forced back into work thanks to a sinister crime

😂😂😂😂

If you’re into the classic (for a reason) trope, then Monsieur Spade is the detective drama (https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/uk/lifestyle/a71000792/best-kept-secret-cosy-crime-dramas/) we'd highly recommend watching tonight.

In the peaceful French village of Bozouls, legendary Detective Sam Spade (Clive Owen) is trying to enjoy his well-deserved retirement when a heinous crime drags him back into action

Detective Sam Spade isn't just any detective, he's a household name in the literary world, having been the centre character of the 1930 novel, The Maltese Falcon, by Dashiell Hammett.

While the TV series isn't a direct adaptation of the book, it is a series that brings Detective Spade to life in very pleasing fashion - and you can expect the perfect blend of Sherlock’s wit and the cosiness of Midsomer Murders (https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/uk/lifestyle/a69958763/best-cosy-crime-dramas-itv/)from it.

The six-part series begins in 1955 when Detective Sam Spade (Clive Owen) is paid to deliver a young girl named Teresa to the father she's never known in the quiet French village of Bozouls - but no one seems to know her father’s whereabouts.

When Teresa’s grandmother refuses to help, Spade leaves the girl with the local nuns. Instead of booking the next flight back to San Francisco, he chooses to settle down in the rural village after falling in love with a woman named Gabrielle (Chiara Mastroianni).

Suddenly, we're transported to 1963 and Spade – suffering from emphysema - is living in the estate he inherited from Gabrielle, who died in the years before the eight-year time jump.

Spade’s quiet retirement comes to a screeching halt when six nuns are massacred at a nearby convent.

The murders are somehow connected to a mysterious child and his own past, and Detective Space works tirelessly to uncover the dark secrets surrounding the murders while the locals grieve.

•	Clive Owen (Closer, Sin City) as Detective Sam Spade
•	Cara Bossom (Deep State) as Teresa
•	Denis Ménochet (Inglourious Basterds) as Chief of Police Patrice Michard

Love Clive Owen. But he does generally just play Clive Owen, which is absolutely fine.

diddl · 09/05/2026 20:11

I'll give it a go!

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/05/2026 20:45

Finding it a bit slow, will persevere.

ADCisntme · 09/05/2026 23:29

I put it on thinking it was a French noir with subtitles.

AlwaysRightISwear · 10/05/2026 17:39

I quite liked this and will stick with it. I wouldn't call it cosy though...

Definitely not cosy. I’m on episode 5 now, binge watching. A slow and stylish burn. And more Clive Owen arse. What’s not to like.

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/05/2026 20:31

Now you know I don’t like spoilers

but just asking if one might see a pert CO Bum again in 2-5

OP posts:
Blondeshavemorefun · 10/05/2026 20:58

Just watched final episode. Might be worth taking notes as it was way too complicated for me. I was just there for the CO arse.

Just watched ep #1, and I think it's fair to say, it's a lot more 'Sam Spadey' than Madame Blanc-ey, which was not what I expected. But I might (rarely) binge this. Not because I think it's amazingly good, more that's pretty slow, and I don't think it's 'appointment TV' material.

moto748e · 12/05/2026 00:25

Just noticed on the credits; co-written by Tom Fontana, the guy behind Homicide: Life On The Street, and Oz, and much other good stuff.

Blondeshavemorefun · 12/05/2026 09:27

Being 90mins I have to concentrate more - prefer an hour

I don't do cosy crime but I'll watch because he's in it.

moto748e · 13/05/2026 20:06

One thing I'll say; it's a lot less 'American' and a lot more 'French' than I expected (despite the preponderance of the English language).

E2 tonight

The tragedy of the horrific murders felt by all in the town pulled out of retirement spade begins to investigate

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/05/2026 20:43

This is confusing. I won’t say why as hasn’t been shown yet

I thought was 8pm but reliesed it must have been via demand as on my planner

and yes a bum again. For a 61yr man. He has a nice butt

OP posts:
moto748e · 16/05/2026 21:04

It seems regular appearances by Mr Owen's Arse were a contractual requirement.
