Would you recommend the TV series Grace starring John Simm?

Is it good like Line of Duty good, or Unforgiven good?

Looking for something new to watch and British.

Not really, no.

It’s a while since I watched it so I don’t remember the details - but I recall it lacked all the qualities the two shows you mention had.

If you want something epic - try The Responder.

For something quirky but brilliant - Dept Q.

MegMortimer · 03/05/2026 19:51

I love John Simm but I have to agree with the PP: Grace is not one of his better things.

ErrolTheDragon · 03/05/2026 19:52

It may not be quite as good as them but imo it’s better than some police dramas.

HoiityToity · 03/05/2026 19:54

no. It’s a bit rubbish.

Have you watched The Responder and The Cage? I think they are written by the same writer.

AlwaysPurple · 03/05/2026 19:55

The Roy Grace books by Peter James, which the TV series are based on, are brilliant in my opinion. Never been fussed by the TV shows.

Arregaithel · 03/05/2026 19:55

@LindorDoubleChoc sorry, daft question, but British because it's set here or because it's in English?

Have you watched Dept Q? on Netflix

BreakfastOfWaffles · 03/05/2026 19:56

I would say it's not as well written as Line of Duty and Unforgotten (love both those shows). It's still worth watching though. It does have a long running thread about Grace's personal life that spans the series, and that's a bit of an afterthought that sometimes makes it quite clunky.

TheOriginalFrench · 03/05/2026 20:00

Have you watched

Adolescence

@Lindor?

Or, outside police procedurals - the two very best shows since 2020:

I May Destroy You

Imdustry

Totally agree with this. I watched John Simm yesterday in Prey, I think on Netflix, it’s on ITVX as well. Short series, but I really enjoyed it. Although when it got to the end I realised I’d seen it years ago.

RandomUsernameHere · 03/05/2026 20:04

It’s good but not as good as the other two you mentioned.

Damsonjam1 · 03/05/2026 20:05

It's good insofar that each episode is a self contained story and it does keep me engaged. I have a connection to Brighton, so also enjoy seeing the local area. There is a thread running through all the series about Grace's backstory, that I find a bit OTT.

WildGarden · 03/05/2026 20:17

I gave up watching this because I found a couple of the episodes unbearable to watch. People kept captive and treated horrifically by their captors. The final straw was a horrific incident I wish I'd not seen. I completely admit I have a low threshold for these things so others may disagree.

I totally agree. Great books, dire telly, very boring. I like John Simms but not as Grace.

yellowgarden · 04/05/2026 15:41

It’s standard Sunday night itv drama though. Not in the same league as LOD etc but good for Sunday night viewing imo.

LindorDoubleChoc · 05/05/2026 06:27

Thanks for all replies. Think I might keep looking!

Sooo dull. I just didn't care about any of the characters.

TheChiffchaff · 05/05/2026 12:34

I've read the books and watched the TV series. It's an adequate police series which sticks very closely to the books. There's a long running and very tedious thread about Grace's ex wife which spoils the books and the TV programme. There's also no trace of humour in any of it.

Have you watched This City is Ours? Utterly gripping drama based in Liverpool about organised crime.

Belladog1 · 05/05/2026 12:35

I just watched the series Gone on itvx. It was a british show I really enjoyed it. A good few twists and turns.

Edited to say - I binged it in a day

Shangrilalala · 05/05/2026 23:17

You could try Annika with Nicola Walker. That’s excellent.

hattie43 · 06/05/2026 06:26

No , I’ve read the books but the TV version is just dull and many times I’ve not reached the end . Shame because I like JS as an actor but I don’t think he brings enough energy to Roy .
