Sexist comment on Homes Under the Hammer about son and daughter roles

On an episode today of Homes under the hammer, a couple with two children have bought a plot to build a house. The man is a builder. Dion Dublin asked the boy if he gets stuck in with dad to knock walls down. He then turned to the girl and asked her if she would help mum with interior design and fluffy cushions.

This blatant everyday sexism in 2026 is disturbing.

Appalled. In the 1980s, my 20-something brother gave me a hammer drill as a present. We shouldn't be having to have conversations about gender roles 40 years later.

I remember being a child and a relative asked me 'Would you like to be a nurse when you grow up?' and I thought 'If I were a boy, I'd have been asked if I wanted to be a doctor'.

The relative would be about 120yrs old now.

@Villanousvillans , complain. If it was on the BBC, put as much detail in the complaint as you can - date& time, who said it and to whom etc.

In the 1970s, a careers advisor at school asked me if I wanted to be a nurse or a secretary. I wanted to be neither.

I've complained about a few things over the years but not without reason.
There is no point in whingeing about it - if enough people complain we'll get results.

They exist and there would probably be more of them if people weren't planting ideas in children's heads that there was such a thing as girls/boys jobs.

I would love to be a brick layer. I think it’s quite a creative role. We had a really hard time finding a good one to do an outside wall and he did an amazing pattern

I have my painting and decorating done by a woman. She’s absolutely excellent. She’s the only female trades person I know of.

Growing up, the occupations I knew of were schoolmaster (m), schoolteacher (f) doctor, dentist, nurse, solicitor, accountant, vicar, mechanic, builder, electrician, plumber, engineer, architect, factory worker (m if engineering, f if clothing), shop assistant, cook (f), chef (m), dinner lady, school caretaker, newsagent, author etc

All were clearly defined as male or female. A nurse was female, a doctor was male, otherwise they were a male nurse or a lady doctor.

Agree and equally the boy might do interior design.
